For those who have nursed a child who is old enough to talk

(No this isn't a DM "shame on you!" thread)

I was casually wondering what's going through my 3 month old's mind, maybe something about how one side has a nice flow but the other's a bit stop/ start, or how milk tastes different some days, or that some positions are harder work than others...

So, for those of you who have nursed a talking toddler, what comments have you had about mummy's milk?

What a wonderful thread!

Cies · 06/08/2011 22:18

Ds is 20 mo, and asks for "sa" (side, as in the other side), or "mas" (more, he's bilingual).

His face always lights up when I offer him milk, and he'll lead me to the chair if he thinks I'm taking too long to comply with his wishes.

I'll quiz him tomorrow about what it tastes like, and where it comes in his taste ranking Smile

AilsaCelia · 06/08/2011 22:19

thank you for all these lovely stories! my dd2 is nearly two and happily b-feeds at least a few times a day. no shouting about getting boobs out in our house, though - she calls it 'snuggle', which feels very sweet and affectionate. ;-)

bushymcbush · 06/08/2011 22:24

My dd (2.11) calls it "mummy milk" and my breasts, despite me telling her they are called breasts, are called "milks".

She will stop nursing and say "that one's not working, I want the other one."

She hasn't tried to describe it other than "nice" or "lovely" or "my favourite".

I have asked her whether she prefers mummy milk or fridge milk / beans / ice cream / pasta / chocolate and the answer is always mummy milk.

She sometimes breadtfeeds her own toys, or passes them to me and asks me to give them mummy milk.

But even though she's a chatty little thing, she doesn't really talk about breast feeding much at all, except to demand it regularly!

yellowkiwi · 06/08/2011 22:25

According to my DS nothing tastes as good. I tried offering him all sorts of drinks to encourage him to wean but there was just no competition. He said it tasted sweet.

He stopped bfeeding 3 years ago now but he still remembers it.

LargeGlassofRed · 06/08/2011 22:35

My twins are 2 and 2 months and have always had their own sides, and dt1 is cheeky and will ask for dt2's boobie :-)
Even though dt2 isn't that interested anymore he still gets very upset if dt1 trys his side.
Very cute :-)

spiderlight · 06/08/2011 22:56

'booby tastes like sunshine'. - that is wonderful!! :o

lilbreeze · 06/08/2011 23:10

I've got nothing to add personally as neither of my DDs were talking by the time I stopped bf them, but I wish there was a 'like' button on this thread!! Grin

TheMitfordsMaid · 06/08/2011 23:11

DS1 was nearly 3 when he self-weaned, and he used to call it boat, which I liked because it was something personal and private to us. Not DS2 - he shouts "boob, my big big boob, my boob, my boob mummy" which is a very clear signal about what he wants. He is 2.3 years, and according to him it tastes like chocolate.

4madboys · 06/08/2011 23:18

awww very sweet stories :)

my ds1 rather unfortunately used to have one side and then ask for 'titty two' that was not so good and only happened after i said it once in jest and he then stuck with it Blush

i learnt my lesson the other boys called it 'milka' ds2 inparticular was a big milka fan and is now 9 and still talks about feeding occasionaly, he was nearly 4 when he weaned and still remembers.

i used to have bfeed his toy diggers Hmm

stereomary · 06/08/2011 23:48

I'm very jealous of these stories. The longest I breastfed for was 13 months, but would've loved to carry on longer. My middle child stopped very suddenly at 12 1/2 months, and a couple of weeks later I found I was pregnant so that's probably why. Otherwise I think she's still feed now! She's 4 next week and still likes to cuddle up every night with her hand down my top! Her baby brother is 2 now and lost interest around 13 months :-(

DuelingFanjo · 06/08/2011 23:57

showofhands, what a lovely post. great thread.

Bunsouttheoven · 07/08/2011 00:57

My ds 2.5yr says I love mummy's boobie, nuvva boobie please, I like them I doooo! I have little mole on one and he says where's the mole can I stroke it? So sweet.

DD now 5 stopped feeding at 2.5 when I was pregnant with ds. Still says she remembers having boob (her first word at 9mo). She used to say it is tastes sweet & kindSmile

Herbiethecat · 07/08/2011 07:26

Awww, "sweet and kind".

Clothilde · 07/08/2011 08:28

DD (four and a three quarters) says that "It's nice and it's quite relaxing and umm.... it's quite watery. It tastes like, I'm not really sure. It's sweet, a bit like bananas. If you have boodymilk when you feel sad, it makes you feel better. If you are sore, it helps get rid of the sore bits. Kisses and sticking plasters don't work as well."

Clothilde · 07/08/2011 08:31

After her comments about hurting, I asked how boodymilk compared to medicine( eg Calpol), and she said that they worked about the same.

annieversaire · 07/08/2011 08:47

Bushy, ours are known as milks as well...funny isn't it. And I've been asked to bf various toys as well.

Buzz lightyear was a cherished moment.

levantine · 07/08/2011 08:47

Aw Grin

My DS1 self weaned at 2 1/2

He sometimes makes comments to DS2 along the lines of "oh DS2 that side is easier isn't it"

bonkers20 · 07/08/2011 08:52

DS2 (28 months) didn't get to bed until 10pm last night so we've just got up (just in case you're going to wonder how it's nearly 9am and we're just up!).

I'm currently downstairs making tea and DS is in his cot with books singing up a scale in a rising crescendo "Mummy mummy mummy mummy...." then down the scale "Milk milk milk milk....."

Mostly he doesn't comment on the details, he just asks for "Mummy milk" and when he's emptied one side asks for "more". He only has it when he's sleepy though so he associates it with wind down time and being quiet. I don't talk to him about it at other times because he would ask to have some and I don't want that.

ensure · 07/08/2011 10:09

I asked DD what she likes about it, she says it gives her energy (!), and cheers her up and makes her feel better.

DS1 said it was sweet and just the nicest thing ever. He was loathe to give it up (finally managed it just after his third birthday).

Eglu · 07/08/2011 20:58

What a great thread to start OP. I am currently 6 weeks in to feeding DD, the longest I've managed so far, and this thread is just lovely.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/08/2011 21:03

DD (2.7yrs) says it tastes like 'milk' Grin. Although she is very specific about when she wants milk-from-mummy and when milk-from-cows.

She also says that it helps her calm down and stops her feeling upset. :)

Sariska · 07/08/2011 21:43

I am -somewhat reluctantly (it's complicated...) - weaning 3.5 yo DS. He loves his "Mummy milk" and I feel so mean denying it to him, especially since I read a comment on here the other day about how, to an extended BFer, BFing is as natural and essential as breathing.

Oh well. 16 mo DD is still going strong. And has just started saying "Mi mi mi" with great enthusiasm for a variety of things, including milk.
