My month old ds is quite regular in his feeds every 3 hours, but recently thats been because i ignore his crying and rooting for as long as possible during the day, when he seems to want to feed more often ( i know he can go 6 hours without a problem sometimes so i think the rooting is just looking for comfort). The problem is, he won't feed for more than 5-10 mins and then resolutely refuses to take more and is usually very sleepy. we've tried changing his nappy to wake him up, but this just pisses him off and he will go back on the boob only to chew on it. ive also tried changing breasts even tho im pretty sure he hasnt finishes the first one (a big no-no i know) and he will drink more sometimes but thats probably cos the fore milk is sweeter?
any suggestions?

aha.....see my response on your other thread, pog. I think you may well have an over supply issue.

One thing to try with this is to dampen your supply by feeding from one side only for several hours (not continuous feeding for hours, but every time the baby comes to the breast in a period of, say, four or five hours, you only offer the same side). You may need to gently express a little at first, on the other side, for comfort only.

Gina For talks bs about demand feeding, BTW.

Just to add - babies who feed three hourly at first may not be setting a pattern for life. They are allowed to change their minds!!

DS used to feed for ages. DD doesn't.

Have to admit I'm not getting her weighed very often so don't know how much she weighs but she is definitiely getting bigger as she is growing out of her clothes.

Pogface - in terms of what you say about rooting/crying but then not eating, this used to happen with my DD shortly after some feeds and it took me a while to realise that she was actually tired. I found the signals very similar - it wasn't until I read the great Tracey Hogg that I realised what was going on.

tiktok - i think you might be right about oversupply, or at least fast letdown. i'm trying taking him off for moment when it really kicks in.

everyones comments abt their own speedfeeders have been v reassuring. i am going to stop worrying abt timing! thank u.
