What proportion of your life have you spent breastfeeding?

Sitting here musing about DS2 nearly being a year old I realised I have spent 4 years of my life breastfeeding - that's nearly 15% of my life. If you take pregnancy into that as well I have spent over 20% of my life pregnant/
breastfeeding or 67% of my adult life doing so Shock.

How long have you breastfed and been pregnant for in total?

1/107 - whatever that is in percentages. Doesn't sound like much but the 4 months I managed to BF were some of the longest of my life!!

msmiggins · 01/08/2011 06:06

7% breastfeeding, but I am 49, so that's seven and a half years.

alexpolismum · 01/08/2011 15:09

4 years 3 months breastfeeding (and counting!) but I'm not sure how to work out the percentage.

30 months pregnant (3 children and one miscarriage)

I don't mind admitting that if it weren't for MN and Tiktok in particular, I probably wouldn't have totted up even one month breastfeeding and I shall be eternally grateful.

mawbroon · 01/08/2011 17:52

Pregnant/breastfeeding constantly since feb 2005.

Ds1 and 2 are tandemming, so not sure whether to count them together or not.

ds1 69months bf so far
ds2 17 months so far

total = 86months = 7yrs 2months = 18% of my whole life

Or 36% of adult life!

And I've just spent 5 mins of my life that I will never get back working this out!! ShockWink

Tuschinski · 01/08/2011 18:27

4 years and counting, the last 5 years and one month either pregnant and/or breastfeeding, 10%.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 01/08/2011 19:46

Totally gobsmacked by some of the figures here....Am I right in thinking OP that you are 26 yrs old, bf first child to age of 3, then got pregnant again? Trying to work out the maths.

I've been pregnant 2% of my life (1 pregnancy, age 34) and been bf'ing 0.02%. Latter number will never rise higher than 3% unless we have another child which is 50/50 at this point.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 01/08/2011 19:57

Grin - nope, is like a puzzle isn't it.

I am 29 but with 3 DC's

Breastfed one for 16 ish months

Another for 20 ish

And still doing the other one

Presumably if we lived 100 years ago it would have been a whole lot more...

TransatlanticCityGirl · 01/08/2011 22:21

Ah yes it is a puzzle...!

Actually 100 years ago, we probably wouldn't have breast fed at all! It's a very interesting history... Only recently has bf'ing gained in popularity! :)

Ungratefulchild · 01/08/2011 22:25

15% of my life breastfeeding, and I'm 47.

1/33 or about 3%. 12 months for one child.

It's not much, really is it?

Roughly 18/45ths. DS1 was born when I was 24, Youngest child when I was 37, fed continuously until youngstt self weaned at just past 5, regularly tandem feeding, nursed 3 for a good while. SO almost 18 years or 40%

stressedHEmum · 01/08/2011 22:54

Oh, forgot about the pregnant bit, so 5 x 40 weeks = 200 weeks pregnant or just sort of 4 years. SO 22 years all together or just under 50% of my whole life.

rainbowtoenails · 01/08/2011 22:59

10%, i'm shocked, id never thought of that before. Most of that was only 1 or 2 feeds a day, though.

WoTmania · 01/08/2011 23:22

18.3% - DD is 2.5 adn DS2 was 4 when he last nursed so it might be a while, if she nurses to his age it will be 22.5%

TransatlanticCityGirl · 02/08/2011 08:48

Is anyone double counting? Eg if preggers and nursing at same time, or counting tandem feeding for each child?

stressedHEmum · 02/08/2011 08:55

TCG, probably me, actually, now that I think about it. Apart from with DS1, I was BFing during all my pregnancies. Suffice to say that I nursed continuously for almost 18 years from start to finish. During that time, I tandem and triple fed, but was always nursing at least one child.

So, probably about 18 1/2 years. Over 40% of my whole life 0r almost 70% of my adult life.

pinkytheshrinky · 02/08/2011 09:02

I am 41 and have spent 5 and a half years breastfeeding and three years pregnant!!!!

Because I am so elderly the percentages are not all that I imagine but flipping heck I had not added it all up before, that's a really long time (and still have at least another 6 months breast feeding for dc4 left in me and probably another baby too.....)

upahill · 02/08/2011 09:11

I think it is less than 1/46ths!!
Not sure wht tha is a % tbh.
But I am 46 and 2 months and I bf 2 lads for a total of 11 months.
