What are my rights re refusing a MW visit? Legal position?

Or rather, postponing one?

DS born 16th July at 4260g, day 5 3840, day 7 3920g, day 11 (yesterday) 3920g. EBF.

MW wants to come again tomorrow to check weight again with a view to a medical review if static again. Initially I agreed but now I'm wondering if she's being too hasty. He does have a touch of jaundice tbh, but he's not lost any more weight and I feel I'm being rushed into a medicaslised feeding solution.

If I say no and ask to wait until Tuesday am I going to get into 'trouble'?

Smile Fab that you got a 'reprieve'.

Have a great, restful weekend and try not to stress. Easier said than done obv.

Re nappies - prolific!

Interestingly the MW was slightly warning me off switch nursing in case he doesn't get any hindmilk. Presumably I'm safe to ignore that and carry on? After all, my boob isn't going to fill again to such a quantity that it's got foremilk again in 5-15 mins? Confused

And yes, he's fine in himself. Spends a lot of time looking about and 'chatting' IYKWIM? All in all, he's a pretty contented soul, just not gaining weight just yet!

OK....any midwife who talks about hindmilk in this way is underinformed. Babies gain weight by accessing and taking in volume of milk and we don't need to worry that they are not on long enough.

The knowledge that milk increases in fat as the breast empties has been totally highjacked by these misunderstandings.

Yes, milk does increase in its fat proportion as the milk is removed. This does not mean the baby needs to 'drill down' to the hindmilk or that it is only ever foremilk at the start of the feed....switch nursing, and short frequent feeds, increase the amount of milk produced and the amount of milk that gets into the baby.

I think the hottap analogy is quite good re: foremilk/hindmilk. If you think of turning on the hot tap - it doesn't suddenly go from cold to scalding. It is a gradual change. Same with your milk, throughout the feed it gradually gets more and more fatty.

I thought so. I shall smile and nod at that bit then...

I'm a bit confused at the implication that he must be going hell for leather at all times too. I've broken the latch several times to swap or because he appeared to be asleep only to find a steady leak of what def looks like hind milk.

Oh, it's all so confusing!

*hot tap - I'm making loads of typos todays

WoTmania · 28/07/2011 10:38

If he seems fine and you're not worrying about your supply could it be that he didn't gain over a couple of days and then made up for it? Maybe he did one of those crazy little growth spurt things some babies do?

buttonmoon78 · 02/08/2011 20:35

Thank you for all the advice! S put on 80g again when weighed today so has clawed back 160g of his 420g loss so far.

MW pleased (so am I) and am planning to continue with the 2/3 hourly feeding as a max interval.

Jaundice lessening too.
