My DD is 5 weeks today and i have EBF from as soon as she could latch on (tongue tie sorted at day 2). I have been having real pain on one breast on and off since the beginning - blocked ducts, milk blisters etc and it keeps getting really engorged. I'm at the stage where I basically dread feeding as the pain is so bad. I've been to BF clinics and paid to have a private lactation consultant who all say my latch is good but clearly something is not right. Sometimes part of the nipple comes out misshapen.
I've been told that I might be suffering a bit of PND which I can in my more logical moments, see might be the case and I don't think the BF is helping. I wanted to do it as long as possible but I'm now seriously thinking of moving to formula so I can at least try and look forward to feeding times.
I would appreciate advice about how to do this without causing me more pain and least stress to DD and any other thoughts appreciated.
Thanks. Sad

We had terrible wind problems, in fact DS ended up on medication because of it (before I finally worked out what the problem was). It really sounds like the TT is still a problem for your DD. There are several theories why they get so much wind, this article goes into it in more detail but its long and not something you will want to read now: milkmatters.org.uk/2011/05/23/is-tongue-tie-the-cause-of-your-babys-reflux-colic-or-wind/

I used to lay at 45 degree angle, watch for windy signs and then wind him. Another good way is to sit her forward on your lap, wrap your hands around her torso (thumbs at back, fingers around the front) and just sit there and wait for the wind to come up, 10 minutes or so.

Sorry crikey, didn't mean to sound like I was jumping at you (I wasn't, and wouldn't :) )

OP, song mentioned Milk Matters. They do an excellent TT advice service by email: milkmatters.org.uk/international-service-tongue-tie-talk/

I see you have already had loads of great advice!! Just wanted to say that you have done amazingly well to continue BFing this long through pain...just think how many women give up within the first few days!! So you are doing a great job and should be proud of yourself!!! My ds is now 6 weeks, he was a big boy and super hungry and in the first week I spent 99% of my time either crying during feeding as so painful or cry with sheer fear at thought of ds waking again to feed!! My dh went out and bought formula and bottles to give me option! I gave my ds a bottle of formula one night and felt like I had poisoned him and so guilty....so silly as this stuff is scientifically made for infants!!!!! Now I do both, bottle feeding gives my nipples a break and expressing keeps my supply up! Not to mention it makes getting out and about easier without having to worry about poor latching in public!!! Remember this is completely your choice, you have to feel happy in yourself (easier said than done when sleep deprived I know!!!) BFing die hards can make us feel guilty but doing both still gives baby all the benefits!!!
Good luck in your choice.... But remember to be proud of yourself as you clearly love and want the best for your dd otherwise you wouldn't be so worried!!!!!

hunter do you have anyone locally you can go to to work out why feeding is painful for you? It really shouldn't be like that :)

You're obviously working really hard to BF. If we can help, do let us know.
