Advice needed please for sister

My sister gave birth early on Monday morning to a lovely little boy :), by emergency c-section, and they've been in the High Dependency Unit. The nurses there have been giving top-up feeds of formula via syringe, as 'breastfeeding doesn't seem to be going very well' (their words).
My sister was really keen to try BFing, but if the nurses are feeding by syringe then surely my DN won't feel the need to BF?
I've suggested to my sister to keep DN as close as possible, and to let him feed as often as he wants, but she's finding it difficult as she has to ask the nurses to lift DN to her.
Is there any encouragement or better advice that I could give her?

Thanks

Huff, Karla is wonderful and it would be great if your sister could speak to her.

Also, there is a breastfeeding peer support scheme called Best Buddies. They are in the North and South sides of Edinburgh (no idea where your sis lives obviously!) and the infant feeding team can organise a peer supporter if she would like one once she feels up to it.

Does she know about biological nurturing? I'm fairly sure that Karla would be encouraging her to try it.

Every 3 hours doesnt sound often enough, you are right. She should try and keep her LO as close as poss (difficult with a CS I know - maybe she could ask for one of those side car cots that attach to her bed?) and gently offer a feed at every little cue. They may have meant AT LEAST every 3 hours, but if she watches closely for cues it it likely to be much more often than this. She is lucky to have someone so supportive. :)

I think the 3 hour thing is if he's sleeping longer than this between feeds she should wake him up. So it's a maximum gap between feeds rather than an aim, especially as they have said "Or more often if he wants"
