All help please. I am fully bf. I need to express milk because when I go to collect my ds1 from school it's touch and go if baby sleeps all the way till home or wakes up for a "snack". On a couple occassions I had to feed him on the bus!! I couldn't bare to leave him crying!! The bus is a "Hoppa" and gets very crowded with school children, and adults. I have only had one success when using a pump, I needed to go to dentist and would be some time so needed dh to feed him. All other times have failed, it's like the milk dreis up after a couple of "pumps" What am I doing wrong? please help!! It would also help for times when I am out when bf isn't practical as I need to stand up.

Hi there,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are out of date. If you're struggling to find a breast pump that works for you, take a look at our round up of the 10 best breast pumps available in the UK.

Hope that helps,

Bron, I love the squidgy bit...I work from home (start early - before 8 - and finish at 4.30) so finding somewhere to express isn't a problem; at the moment I'm doing a 'bag and freeze' express at around 9-9.30 am. It just seems to be getting harder, but it has been pointed out to me that this is undoubtedly worry about feeding baby sufficiently, going back to work, etc.

Right; dd2 is having trial session at childminder this morning. I fed her at 7am, didn't express or do 10am feed; got around 8.5 oz at lunchtime. It took about half an hour - about half in the first five minutes - and I could have kept going...

Is this a fairly low amount, or normal, or what?

That is absolutely fantastic Did you keep switching from side to side as the milk flowed? THat can speed it up a bit. Sometimes I felt like wringing them out like a cloth to speed it up

Bloody fantastic Motherinferior. See? I TOLD you it would be ok Plus you will be able to do an afternoon and bedtime feed if you want. No worries!

I hired an electric pump and felt like a cow. Yuk. The Avent was good once I got going! Trouble was, loads from right breast and barely nothing from the left.

Oh, thank you. I'll probably end up aiming for a late morning express and a mid-afternoon one, on days when I don't have to leave home!

Little wotsit apparently refused her expressed bottle at childminder, but she can do it when she feels like it; and quite honestly she feeds so often during the day that as long as she gets one decent bottle in the daytime I don't think she'll perish...

gnaws gnails again
