dont buy the mini medula electric, i am about to get my 2nd one in 9months replaced. grrrr.

I am an exclusive pumper and I use an ameda lactaline which is a bit noisey but works well. I have an avent isis manual pump for when i go out and don't have access to a power point. Its down to personal preferance at the end of the day but i do find that i can express more in shorter time with the electric pump.

GREATauntymandy · 24/11/2005 18:39

just laughing at my self I thought the title was musical v manual!!!
imagine that!!!

starlover · 24/11/2005 18:46

it depends how much expressing you're going to do.

as someone who ended up exclusively expressing there is no way i could have done without my medela electric pump.

but for just using every now and then a manual one is fine

lummox · 24/11/2005 18:47

another vote for the ameda lactaline. very expensive though.

starlover · 24/11/2005 18:48

the thing is, before you have the baby you have no idea if you're even going to breastfeed.... so it isn't something i would buy before i gave birth

agree with starlover - they are not cheap and you need to make sure that BF is for you before you invest as shops won't take them back. You can always dispatch dh/dp to the shops once you have sussed it or buy online.

I was advised off a manual pump by a friend who said she almost got RSI as she was pumping so much! Used the medela mini electric one myself which was OK but very noisy. Think they all may be noisy though. Incidentally, you can rent them which may be a better bet, depending on how much expressing you end up doing, whether you want a double one etc etc

starlover · 24/11/2005 19:21

yeah i hired mine! ended up i would have been better off buying one in the first place, but at the time i didn't realise ds was going to be such a nightmare at feeding! lol

finefatmama · 24/11/2005 22:26

I agree that it depends on usage. manual pumps are fine for occasional use.

I have both avent manual ameda lactaline. used both for one week and i believe i should have stuck with the cheaper avent option. it was just as effective.

I'm cross because ds latched on a couple of days after i spent good money on the lactaline - he was 8 weeks . I guess i will have to sell it on ebay when i get round to fishing it out.

suzi2 · 24/11/2005 22:59

I have one of each. Medela mini electric - efficient but noisy. & tommee tippee freedoms one - not bad and quiet. I take the manual one out & about if I have planned to pump. I use both daily.

I would watch out for special offers. I got the TT one half price at Tesco for £11 so it wasn't too big a deal if I didn't use it much.
