Dr Brown's bottles- how do you sterilise them?

Hi ! We have just bought a couple of Dr Brown's bottles after several nights of pacing the living room with DD2 screaming from trapped wind! I'm desperate to get started with them but the instructions don't say how to sterilise them! Does anyone know if it is OK to put them in an Avent microwave steriliser? If not, what's the best thing to do with them??? Help!!

Sorry can't help but just wondered, what are Dr Brown's bottles? Thought I would bump this thread in case anyone else can help. Don't know how old your dd is but I have found gripe water to be pretty effective with my ds (4 1/2 weeks old) i just put a small tsp in each feed, and they can take this from 4 weeks old. Also, although I'm a total novice when it comes to bottles, I understand that teat size can make a difference - perhaps someone with more experience can help. Hope you sort it.

Thanks Spod! I'll chuck them in the microwave now! All is quiet at the moment but it was 8.30pm that it all kicked off last night. The next feed is due in about 1/2 hour! Fingers crossed! Did you put the teats in the steriliser aswell Spod?

Cubby - thanks for your message! Gripe water was a godsend with DD1 - but this lo is only 12 days old so too young at the moment! Dr Brown's bottles are ones with this tube thing in them to try and eliminate some of the air from the teat so that the baby swallows a lot less than with, say, an Avent teat. I am a novice but I have read good things on here about them and to be honest anything is worth a go!!

I used Dr. Brown's with ds2. Ds1 had no problems with Avent bottles right from the start even with the number 2 teats that came with them rather than newborn teats. Ds2 however gulped and choked on no. 1 and no.2 teats, had quite severe colic and was very unsettled. Tried Dr. Brown's and never looked back. They've got some kind of airflow system so the air bubbles can escape rather than the baby swallow them. They worked from day 1. Had also treid Infacol to absolutely no effect for some time. Think they're called something else rather than Dr Brown's now...
Have also seen some fab but strange-looking bottles on The Baby Whisperer for colic - massive teat which only lets some milk flow if the baby sucks. This lets them control the flow and have rests when they need to.

Back to the point, I used to sterilise all the different bits in an Avent microwave steriliser and they were fine.

Thanks Calista! It's good to know your DS2 got on well with them! My DD1 never had a problem with Avent either - but it has been a nightmare with DD2. I have sterilised the Dr Brown's and we are all set to start using them next feed. I am quite excited at the prospect of an easier night, so here's hoping they help!

Another tip for colic is to put a rolled up blanket or similar under the matress at the point where your baby's head lies. When you raise their head it stops the trapped wind making acid rise up into baby's throat and burning, and lets wind pass out of the body more easily. The Baby Whisperer also did this with the twins with colic and acid reflux too. They were also on some medicine from the doctors for reflux - not sure what age they can have this sort of thing from.

THe baby Whisperer bottle is a Haberman Feeder - VERY expensive (£17.60 for one bottle)

Im tempted with DR Browns too, just not got round to checking them out properly - Rebecca is 4 weeks old today and a nightmare with wind! We have raised her cot which is helping a lot!

I've just swapped ds to Dr Brown's after using Avent and his spit up is nearly gone and his wind comes up fine!!!

Way to go Dr Brown ...

ps I just sterilise in the Avent steriliser

Thanks everyone for your messages- just thought I'd let you know how we got on last night! It was GREAT! Fed DD2 at about 8.45pm and sat there expectantly for 3/4 of an hour waiting for the screaming to start! It didn't - she went off to sleep. Went to bed myself at 9.30pm (knackered- it was my DD1 second birthday yesterday aswell!!) Next thing I knew it was midnight and she wanted feeding again- straight back off to sleep after that. We did another feed at 3am and another at 6am all without screaming- she is still asleep now!! I am amazed that just swapping bottles can have such an effect. Maybe I should give it a bit longer before I start celebrating, but the first signs are good. It seems like she has a lot less wind, but that when there is some wind it comes up easier in 1 or 2 big burps. We were patting her back etc. for ages and she was just making broken bagpipe noises before. DH says he is going to buy some more bottles first thing this morning. The only annoying thing is that you can't fit as many in the Avewnt steriliser cos they are taller, and they won't fit on my fridge shelves for the same reason. Still it is a small price to pay for getthink ing some sleep and to see my LO dozing contentedly instead of writhing in agony!
