Hi i'm fairly new to mumsnet but already addicted! Hoping you guys can help. My dd is almost 4 months and has been a really sickie baby she is sick almost imediately after feeds and continues to posset well up until time for next feed. Recently she has become extrememly hungry and I have introduced baby rice at night with last bottle. She is on 5 7oz feeds a day. Am i over feeding her? the trouble is she seems so hungry. She is luckily a very happy baby and the sickness doesn't seem to bother her (only me! constant washing!)
any advice welcomed

Could be reflux (a sort of acid indigestion due to weak valve at top of stomach). There was a link to a site about it posted on another Vomiting Baby thread the other day which might help. Also gp can prescribe a thickener for milk to help her to keep it down. Usually they start to outgrow it from 6 months.

my dd used to do this. It does get better when you start weaning them. I felt like the first year of her life she wore a bib! Dont worry it is normal.

Huge sympathy Mottie - ds1 was like this. He was breastfed, but was always sick after every meal, and it was horrendous. If we went out anywhere we had changes of clothes for us, never mind him. And it took years off my washing machine. So if it helps, I know how you feel.

However, as the health professionals told me, there's not a lot you can do about it - some kids are just like this, and if they are contented and putting on weight, all you can do is get on with the laundry and pray for good drying weather! The good news is it does tend to settle down at weaning - we started weaning at 20 wks, and by 6 months he had practically stopped being sick at all.

Hope that helps a bit.

The other good news that if you have another, they aren't necessarily like this. DS2 was never sick as a tiny baby.

I had the same as kmg1. My ds was sick lots, thought it never bothered him. He was exclusively bfed until 6 months. When I started solids, he gradually got better and now he's almost 3 and only ever throws up when he's in the car with dh driving.

DS has reflux so I know how you feel. My advice would be keep her upright as much as possible, when you're feeding her, and after a feed and wind her sitting up or on your shoulder, not over your knees. No jiggling about either.

I always dress DS as we're on our way out the door!! Don't know what I'd do without muslins.

35oz doesn't sound excessive to me. I think it all goes on weight. From memory (someone correct me if I'm wrong), I think it's 2 1/2 oz per pound of baby. However, my DS takes more than this.

BR some food for thought,i thought dd had reflux but it turned out she was actually allergic to dairy and is now on soya formula and the vomiting has stopped(we went through 16 bibs,3 sets of clothes and a couple of towels every day)i was taking her to a chiropractor for colic and other things and mentioned the reflux,i was doing as you say kepping her upright etc on the h.v advice but the chiropactor explained that the nerves to the baby's tummy were being compressed by her own weight when she was upright as she didnt yet have the strenghth to hold herself upright,if you can picture the way they sit all scrunched up you could just imagine it???????

Loobie · 10/10/2003 21:59

Oh and she was gaining weight and was very healthy so i was also told she's just a sicky baby until i insisted on her having her formula changed to soya and the vomiting stopped overnight practically, you can buy infant gaviscon from the pharmacy which you add to the bottles or you could try a formula called omneo comfort which is a denser milk so therefore will stay down better.?? bunnyrabbit · 12/10/2003 00:53

Loobie,
Interesting that you should mention this as my mum says I was allergic to milk when I was a baby....

Which country are you in?? I have infant gaviscon but thought you could only get this on persciption. Do you have a brand name for a soya formula as I might give it a go.....

im in scotland, i give katie wysoy which is made by sma i get it onprescription from the doc.boots wouldn't sell me gaviscon but our safeway pharmacy gave me it no probs,it is available over the counter but i think boots were just being snotty, find their pharmascicts(sp?)very like this or ask your h.v to give you a prescription for it.

Loobie · 12/10/2003 12:59

p.s even though i get her milk on prescription from the docs you can buy it in boots and other big chemists.

I am having the same problem with my 6.5 month old. Ever since he was born he has vomited practically all the time. I weaned him at 4 months and it's no better, worse if anything as now it smells like real vomit and stains everything. Noone will pick him up (apart from us of course!)and he daily covers himself, us, the carpet and the sofa. He must vomit between 50-100 times a day! It's driving me nuts but the health professionals aren;t interested as he's on the 98th centile for weight and the vomiting doesn't sppear to bother him at all.

Hi,

This is my first post, but I thought I ought to warn anyone reading this thread about a condition called pyloric stenosis, which causes vomiting similar to some of the descriptions here. Our then 3 week old son was diagnosed with it a week ago, and was operated on two days later, as it can be life-threatening if left untreated. However, it is pretty rare, so don't panic! Babies with 'py' are generally diagnosed at around 6 weeks, but as we found out, it can start earlier than this. They have a problem with the outlet valve on their stomach, which means food can't pass into their intestine, so it comes back up as projectile vomit. We found it could be either straight after a feed (when it looked like fresh milk) or up to a couple of hours later (when it looked like cottage cheese). The op was very simple, and we were home within 36 hours, but babies who are not treated will often 'fail to thrive', lose weight and have an imbalance in their electrolyte levels, which will make them very ill.

It seems unlikely that your older babies have this condition, but for anyone reading this thread looking for information, it's another option which might be considered. I hope that if this post saves anyone else the heartache we went through when we were told that our son was 'just a sicky baby', it'll have done its job!

I had this with DS1. I was told it was oesophegal reflux and given gaviscon type remedies ( and helpfully patronized a lot by smug GP).
We worked through 6 hellish months.
Found out a few years later he was massively intolerant to dairy. Removed it - hey presto - different child
