Choking at breast

My 6 week old DD keeps choking about 10 mins into her feed and its really scaring me. Does anyone have any advice to stop this? She seems to have too much milk in her mouth and it goes down the wrong way.. She has been slowish to gain weight so i dont think its oversupply. Help!

It does sound like a letdown (not initial letdown, obviously) issue.. have you tried BF lying down? It helped me loads with DD.

Choking or gagging? Full-on choking is silent. Gagging is noisier. babies gag easily as their gag reflex is far forward in the mouth to help keep them safe.

It could be a strong letdown - try leaning back to feed or lying down.

Thank you for your thoughts. I have tried feeding on my side but find it very difficult to latch my baby on that way, but will persevere.

Japhrimel - I think it is choking. Leaning back sounds a good idea if it is letdown, i tend to sit quite upright to feed. Will give that a go.

when let down came I used to take dd off with my little finger, let the milk shoot into muslin, and then put her back on. HTH

This used to happen to me and my dd but as she's got older (12 weeks now) she's got much better at coping with it and will just unlatch for a few seconds to catch breath. She almost looks like she relishes the challenge now...! I just used to sit her up, pat her back and calm her down, then put her back on again once calm. Hopefully it'll get better as your little one gets older too.
