Should I wake my 12 day old DS................

Our lovely, adourable, gorgeous DS3 is having a 5oz bottle every 4-5 hours, he drinks every last bit almost every time so I know he's hungry for it but the last 2 night he has slept past the 11pm/midnight feed and not woken until 2:30/3:00am by which time he is ravenous.
Now normally I'd be saying fantastic as it obviously means we're getting some more sleep but he's so young I feel that to go from 7 or 8pm to 3am is just too long. I know if he was hungry he'd wake up but again because he's so young should I be waking him.
Do you think I should wake him for the feed he's missing out or just thank my lucky stars that he's starting to sleep longer already.

Thanks in advance ladies

thank your lucky stars, sounds fantastic. assuming you are happy with the weight he is putting on. my dd was like this and slept straight through from 7.30 to 7.30 at 7 weeks... bliss.
and if he is draining the bottle, start putting 6 oz in it!

I agree, if he was hungry enough he would wake for his milk anyway. So long as he is putting on weight enjoy the sleep. And like princess peahead says - why not try upping his milk intake in each bottle if he is draining each bottle.

My adage was always - 'NEVER wake a sleeping baby'!

Gina Ford (up to you whether you subscribe to her theories or not!) would say wake him, so that if , as it seems, he is capable of going for one longer stretch it is in the night rather than 8pm-2am. I think she gives guidance as to waking babies depending on their birthweight, in the first few weeks - less than 7lbs at birth, wake at 2.30am, 7-8lbs wake at 3.30am. She suggests a formula fed baby could go a max of 5 hours between feeds.
She says between the second and third week most babies gaining 6-8oz per week can last 4 1/2 - 5hrs - I'm quoting as we didn't see this with our DS for ages!
Hope that helps, congrats on your new addition.

Ooops meant to say, those wake up times assume you have fed at 10pm...

Thanks Ladies.
Tonight has been abit different as his bottles have been due at later times today.
He's finished the last one a little while ago, started at 9:40pm so if he lasts again tonight it should be about 4 or 5am before he wakes again(I am going to bed very soon to make the most of it).
Am I just paranoid that he's missing too much out as he's only 12 days old. Blimey I should be able to answer this now that he's no.3 shouldn't I? Where is his instruction book

Sounds like bliss to me, what's your secret!?!

JulieF · 07/10/2003 22:57

I personally would wake him around 10-11pm as I found that doing so meant that my dd did sleep for longer at night. I was usually still up myself at that time anyway and really appreciated her going longer in the night. It meant she woke arounf 4-5am instead of 2-3am.

EmmaTMG · 08/10/2003 10:30

Well those 2 nights of longer sleep were the only 2 nights. He went back to 4 hourly after I posted this, typical really. Since then he has started drinking less during the night and going back to sleep so I suppose it's still a good thing.
