Refusing a bottle

DS is nearly 4 months old, is bf and is a big time bottle refuser. Am going back to work in September though just on a very part time basis for the first few months. DP has been trying him with bm in a bottle with no luck whatsoever, he gets really, really upset. Have bought a sippy cup to try but I really don't think we will have much more luck. Any ideas? Also I hate expressing, find it really uncomfortable as have massivo breasts and even with xxl suction thing it is still sore but DS has definite ideas about formula too, as in he hates it. So am wanting to plan ahead, ideally I would like him to have mainly ebm in a bottle whilst I am at work as well as the solids that he will be on by then, or at a push formula but currently he won't take either. Any ideas anyone? TIA

On 2nd day of bottle all day. Dh tried for 5 mins or so yesterday, sister cam eround this morning so she had a go. Now dd has woken from nap and about to be my go! Repeat mantra -she will take a bottle. Occasionally takes a little suck when she forgets herself but by no means have we cracked it yet.

Goodluck flower, great that she has had the odd suck on it, DS is tolerating it in his mouth for a while each time we try, but no sucking still. Have enlisted the help of 2year old DD, DS much happier for her to shove it in his mouth than when I or DP try Confused. And thanks again coca for the information, if I can get him drinking at all from it I will try mixing the two I think.

Good luck flowerfairy!

Well, after a fantastic day of feeding from bottles yesterday, which DH and I thought would be a good way to consolidate the success we've had so far, today DD is refusing bottle or breast. Hmm

Day 3 and did manage to get dd to have 20ml by putting her on the breast then in a sleepy state i got the teat in her mouth and she sucked-hurrah!Grin since that point she has been upset all afternoon (was i glad to see dh at 4.40pm today) and had only short naps until she has conked out at 9pm. Did try sucking a bottle in front of her just to see if that would give her any ideas just glad noone can see me.

Day 4 tomorrow and its her jabs so will have to play it by ear. But must keep up with offering it to he r for the first five mins or so.
All the best for tomorrow

How are folk gettting on? Hope things are going well. DS is still letting me put the teat in his mouth without any hysteria and yesterday it really did seem that he was sucking but every time I checked it was stuck at 60mls, it was like one of those toy bottles that refills when you put it upright -sooooooo frustrating! Had an interview yesterday as well for some freelance work, no idea if I will get it but if I do I really need him to start sucking! Hope you are having more luck Coco and Flowerfairy.

Not really. Dh gave her a cup yesterday when he got home which she cried continually through but did drink some of. HAve tried as well this morning through sobs (hers and mine) for longer than 10 mins she did drink about 40 mls. I think she has got her mothers stubborn streakWink
HAve got some bottles ready for later and trying hard not to give up after 5 mins now as itime is ticking down. 3 weeks left and can't face having mil shaking her head and that "If only you'd ff from day 1" look on her face when i pick dd up after my first day at work!

Another vote for cold milk from an open cup here! The Doidy cup is best for us as you don't have to hold it over his face. Also, it seems to work best when he's strapped into his high chair rather than being cuddled - I think if it's similar to bfing he gets confused and upset, but making it a different experience makes it more enjoyable for him. As he's 6 months net week we'll also try mixing bm with weetabix/porridge etc. He will take bm from a spoon but that's a very time-consuming way to feed! I'm trying to build a freezer stash in preparation for going back to work next month and so paranoid about something going wrong with it!
