night feeds and changing

i have two questions. both for future only cos ds is 7 mo now:

  1. how to sort night feeds out if i had most of the milk at night and ds would be hungry without night feed. (i would have even less milk during the day if he didn't empty boobs at night)
  2. i'm going to fix the cot to my bed for another one (if/when i'll have one) to make night feeds as easy as they show them in books, but i'll stil have to get up to change the nappy- ds had dirty nappy after every feed when he was young. so- when did you stop changing at night? Any advise most apreciated

Sorry not sure I understand Q1 ???

Not sure I understand q1 either- I fed on demand and ds dropped night feed at around 14 weeks, d at 8. Yes it did mena that their weight gain tailed off especially for dd but was still able to feed duirng the day and the first feed of the day was the most substantial.

Only ever changed mine at night if they were really full or explosive, although in early days used it as a means to wake ds up as he was drowsy from jaundice.

Re question one, if you feed less (or not at all) at night, your ds will feed more during the day so it will all work out fine. You will probably find yourself yearning to feed him at around 6am to relieve the pressure, but it will all adjust amazingly quickly. You have more milk at night because he feeds more at night. Once you get him hungrier during the day and feeding more during the day you will have more milk then. I got ds off night feeds by spacing them - ie not between, say midnight or 1am and 5am, and then not between midnight and six am, so that you stretch out the period. In a couple of weeks you are aiming for the first feed to be at 7am and no feeds after bedtime. It worked for me. You do not need nights feeds to keep up your supply after seven months of breastfeeding. It really is a case of supply and demand at this stage - your body will make milk when your baby takes it.

BTW my newborn also pooed explosively after every night feed so I jsut changed him. It was hideous, as I recall.

And a little tip to make ngiht-time nappy changes easier: use nighties or a sleeping bag, or both if it's cold, instead of a sleepsuit. Much much easier and less disturbing than struggling with a handful of poppers.
