Have used avenmt which i liked as it was comfy but so complicated to do when very sleep deprived and recovering from asection.

Can anyone else recommend a good one? Am determined to breastfeed next time.

if you are going to be using it a lot then i would DEFINITELY recommend getting a medela hospital style pump.
I hired one for a long time and it was so much better than the avent or tommee tippee ones i had

I used a electric pump and it felt like it was tearing my boob off when trying to get columstrum out. Was not good.

Where can you get a medela pump from?

How many days after the birth did you use an electric pump?

I've been exclusively pumping for 6 months now and have tried the Avent handpump, Medela Mini Electric and the Ameda Lactaline. As a full time pumper I would recommend the Ameda Lactaline. It's expensive but makes my life a lot easier. I use the handpump when out & about. I personally didn't get on with the Medela Mini Electric - but I know of other mums who have done lots of expressing who have. There's a good review of some pumps here and then click on Shopping & scroll down to Electric pumps.

I had a manual one from boots, i only ever managed to get about a teaspoonful out even though the rest of the time I was squirting everywhere, sorry too much info.

jellyjelly · 13/11/2005 21:54

I didnt use the electric for many days because it wasnt available. I brought my own in and i wasnt told how to use it just to read the instructions which i couldnt so quickly changed to bootle whilst in the hospital whilst thinking i could restart at home which i didnt.

aah ok. Its just I was told not to start on the electric pump until 2-3 days after the birth.

jellyjelly · 13/11/2005 21:58

Probaly why i didnt get anything then.

I went on to the electric pump about 1.5 weeks after dd was born. Used a syringe for the colostrum (that really hurt) and then went on to the manual pump. After pumping during the night a few times decided that was far too much work, so bought the electric pump.

starlover · 13/11/2005 22:02

it's probably because your milk can take a few days to come in

i used it to express colostrum for ds. but the max i got int he first couple of days was 10ml which apparently is about right.

jellyjelly · 13/11/2005 22:06

I got a very small drop after 15 mins of pumping.

yes you only get a tiny bit at first. My hospital made us hand epxress for first 2-3 days. Can't remember why though!

suzi2 · 13/11/2005 22:13

I use the medela mini electric. it's great as I can just hold it on and type on here at the same time! It's very noisy though - not for discreet expressing! I also have a manual attachment for it - a tube you slide in and out. Very hard work but very effective.

I also have the tommee tippee freedom one - it was half price at tesco and matches my bottles! It's pretty good although it often pulls my nipple in too far and it bashes off the plate at the back.

jellyjelly · 13/11/2005 22:13

Had a very greedy boy who would just shake his head to get the milk but he was so desperate for milk and would not latch on.
