is it possible to help baby pass wind down below rather than burping? Please help me get rid of her wind!

help! 7wo is really struggling with wind and I'm convinced it's the bottom end she needs to expel it from! I've tried infacol, gripe water, Luke warm water in a bottle-doctor's suggestion as she wouldn't prescribe colief. I wind her in all sorts of positions-she falls asleep but as soon as i lay her down she's squirming in pain and wakes up or wakes up after 20mins still shattered. I'm sure it's her bottom end that's causing the issue. Can anyone help?

We used to lie our daughter down, and do 'bicycling' with her legs for a few minutes. Also lift her legs so that her knees are touching her tummy (feet almost in her face!) for a second or two. Used to work for us.

Good luck.

did she cry while you did it? If so did you just persevere or try a different position? Thanks

Might not be wind - might be silent reflux. Especially, as you say, she gets upset when you lie her down. Have you tried letting her sleep on you or put her cot/Moses basket on a slight incline (books under the feet not mattress) and see what happens? DS had this and sounds similar.

But if it is bum wind, try sitting on a chair, propped up on the bed and place her sitting outwards on your lap, leaning back onto your chest. Gently bring her knees up and bounce them toward her tummy

Or don't put her down until at least 20 mins after a feed and keep her in a sling so she can nap in the day.

No I haven't tried that with the Moses basket I'll give it a try. Thank you.

Hi Cockle

My DD had very same thing and I was convinced it was wind. I now know that she has silent reflux and some digestive issues.
Colief started to help my LO, however saw a vast improvement when I changed her to C&G comfort food. I was EBF and she was doing A LOT of comfort eating which made matters worse. She was in terrible pain and cutting out dairy and wheat didn't make a blind bit of difference.
How are you feeding your LO?
She is also on medication for reflux and this has helped too.

Good luck.

I'm breastfeeding. I wonder if formula would help. She has just done a massive poo which seems to have helped no end. :)

Formula is unlikely to help as it's a little harder to digest than BM. some babies do grow out of this.

You can also try a few mins of tummy time a day as that will also help get bum wind out (not right after a feed though)

My baby had something similar and I thought it might be mild reflux, as baby also quite gurgley when laid down flat. I kept him upright winding him for a good while after night feeds, and bought reflux wedges to raise the cot mattress...I think safer and more effective than standing cot on books, but I did that to see if it helped before I paid out for the wedges. That phase has passed now and I no longer need the wedges. Good luck!

I doubt formula would help either (lots of other stuff at play with my LO) but perhaps try reducing down your dairy or mixing some Colief with a little EBM on a spoon (I think that is the recommendation).
If things have eased with a poo then I would approach your GP again for the Colief on prescription.
Oh, also you could try Bio Gaia probiotics for baby, they are very good at stimulating gut flora and helping baby to digest. Bonus with these is no expressing or mixing required.

Excellent. Thanks everyone.

Also try upping your water intake.... Have you tried baby massage - most sure start centres do free courses and I'd recomment it for this sort of problem...

WillbeanChariot · 26/05/2011 17:24

I was going to say massage. DS had this issue and it helped. You massage below the belly button in a clockwise motion IIRC.

Started giving my ebf some solids at 17 weeks which really helped. I am sure the milk was just gurgling around in there and she needed more substance.

However, in the mean time, gentle tummy massaged helped her. Look into how the digestive system works but I will try to explain...with heal of hand rub up her right side across (just below rib cage) and down her left side. So you are doing three sides of a square. This will aid digestion. Foot rubbing also helped to relax her.
