microwave steriliser....am I being thick?

Hi!

I have the tommee tippee microwave steriliser and it holds 4 bottles. It says that they stay sterile for 24 hours provided it is not opened. So, does this mean that if I get one bottle out to use it, the others need re-sterilising? This seems like a right faff! Am i being stupid here?

Yes i think once the steraliser is opened you have to use the bottles. I had one. What i used to do was steralise a couple of bottles on a morning then put the boiled water in and keep them in the fridge. I would heat the water up and add the powdered milk when needed. Same again on a night Grin

Hey Suzy .

It does BUT to be honest, I've always gone with the 24 hour rule and ignored the once opened bad mummy, as who the hell has time to sterilise one bottle at time before making one feed!?! My LO has never been ill, I really don't see what could go wrong, its just water... Though I don't use formula, just breast milk, but of course the bottles were cleaned when they went in.

In America they only use the dish washer and I'm sure they don't put that on everytime they need to make a feed!!

fifi unfortunatly, with the new rules, formula cannot be made with water below a certian temperature (I think 70??) as the powder is not sterile.

I would not worry about it. The moment you touch the bottle it is no longer sterile anyway!
The main thing is to ensure the bottles are thoroughly cleaned.

Honestly, don't worry. Close it again once you've got one out and relax.

Unless your DC has a severly compromised immune system then the germs that get in from the air during the seconds that it's open are incredibly unlikely to start breeding on a clean sterilised plastic surface and make them ill.

Alternatively make all 4 bottles up at once, keep the extra 3 in the fridge and warm as necessary.

Tarila - it must have changed again, mines 3 now so i may be out of date. DD1 and 2 we used to make milk up and store in fridge. DD3 we had to sterilise the bottles then refrigerate boiled water, then heat the water up and add milk. How times change Grin

fifi25 · 25/05/2011 17:54

I get it. I had to heat the boiled water up add milk then cool again

Tarlia · 25/05/2011 18:17

Its crazy how quickly things change! I bet none of your babies were ill from using old methods either!

Ahhh the days when you could add powder to room temperature water and feed - so easy!

Hi!

Thanks for the replies! I only use 1 maybe 2 bottles a day for breastmilk. I think I will just sterilise in the morning and then remove as I need them.
