As you may know the government has cut funding for BFAW this year.
There is a petition asking them to reconsider this short sighted cost
cutting - it needs 10,000 signatures to get to parliament so please pass it
around - as I write it is on 540, we have a long way to go. The link is here

Thanks!

Done. I wrote to my MP (Grant Shapps) about this in March and received this less than adequate reply:

Many thanks for your recent email to Grant, he has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Breastfeeding has significant short and long term health benefits for both mother and infants beyond the period of breastfeeding itself. The Department of Health recognises the evidence based health benefits of breastfeeding but is also aware that this is a very personal choice for each woman to make and not all mothers are able to or choose to breastfeed.

However, the Department is unable to offer any funding this year for National Breastfeeding Week. Support and information is` currently available to health professionals and parents via NHS Choices, the National Breastfeeding Helpline, UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative and the peer support programmes.

The Department is actively encouraging local groups to nominate representatives from their networks to attend national meetings to continue to share and disseminate positive practice and information. This will help us to ensure continued communication and support until the new public health system is operating

I can assure you that Grant welcomes action to improve rates of breastfeeding. The Government is currently consulting on the White Paper "Healthy Lives, Healthy People: our strategy for public health in England" and associated proposals for a new public health outcomes framework, as well as funding and commissioning of public health services in the newly defined system. Once the consultation closes imminently, everyone's views will be considered the Government will publish a response to the consultation this summer.

In his first response to my message, which he managed to respond to personally, he said that he would find out more about the issue. Clearly he did, and got back to me with the party line. Very disappointing, but certainly I don't think that it should stop other Mumsnetters from harassing contacting their MPs.

You can find your MP's contact details here or send them a message here

I know our bf coordinator for Wales has been retained, so things a little different where I am. However, it's still a good idea. Thanks.
