Very hungry baby

My dd is 14 weeks at the moment and is starting to take loads of formula. Yesterday she had 36oz and would have had a total of 42 but she brought up some after a couple of feeds. As far as I know this is a lot for her age! She's also on 6 month teats already because she sucked the other ones so hard they just kept collapsing. Even the 6 month ones collapse occasionally but not enough to cause a proper problem.

I definitely don't want to start her on solids, I think its much too early but DH and various people are saying that if she's that hungry we'll have to consider it. I was thinking more of the formula for hungrier babies. She's on Aptamil First at the moment and I don't know what it's called but there's an Aptamil for young babies but ones that are hungrier.

I don't think she's just thirsty because she's still going 4/5 hours between feeds, she just takes a lot at each feed. Also, if she is thirsty how do I tell because she hates plain water.

Basically just need some expert Mumsnet advice!!
What's the main difference between the normal formula and the one for hungrier babies?
Is there more chance of her getting too fat with the 'hungrier' formula?
If she carries on being a hungry baby, when's the earliest to consider solids?
....And any other advice would be hugely appreciated!

FWIW everyone ... My DS (who will be 4 in November) ... was a HUNGRY baby ... by the time he went onto solids he was having 40 - 48 fl oz of SMA for Hungrier babies! In fact he never had the first milk - my mother bought it when I was drowning in breastfeeding hell at 6 weeks ... so that is what he had.
I started solids at 13 weeks (but very slowly - only baby rice and pureed pear until 16 weeks) with the backing of my HV as DS was a very large baby and at 3 months was the size of an average 6 month old ...
Oh ... and in 'those days' 16 weeks was the accepted time of introducing solids ... god knows how I am going to wait until 6 months with the next baby!
Anyway ... don't worry about how much they eat ... my DS was a hugely fat baby (many comments were made by strangers)... but now is an averagely sized healthy, not fat, not thin, (almost) 4 year old ....

Oh yes, pupuce, I'll definitely express at work. And indeed, I work from home

Just trying to work out if I'll have to spend all day pumping, and if that'll suffice anyway!

You would be surprise how things quickly evolve.... I think you might be abolutely fine. Babies do DIFFERENT things when in other's hands....

Ghosty, just out of interest, how much did your ds weigh at 3 months and how much at 6 months. My ds is a big boy, not fat really just long and solid. People keep commenting on how big he is and it's beginning to get to me a bit. Interestingly he eats slightly less than dd did at the same age and she was a very average sized baby.

hi BR!
If I gave him 2 oz at night he would scream the house down. He now has 5.5 - 6 oz at every feed, and is feeding 6 or more often 7 times a day (twice at night - about midnight and about 5am, goes straight back to sleep every time).
he has also put on over a pound this week! but I don't have reflux to contend with - poor you. his weight gain sounds fine though, so if he is settled on what you are giving him then I guess I wouldn't change it. if you are bouncing him around for hours to try and get him back to sleep at night though, I'd try and give him a bit more.

Hi PPH,
mmm I think I'll up some of his feeds... he's actually very good at night and tends to go straight back down, which is why I knew he was still hungry after 2oz. I might up the 10.30/11 feed to 6oz and see if this will last him past 3am ...

Glad to hear your DS is thriving too. How much does he waigh now?... I do so love chunky babies and my poor DS was so skinny before. He's finally got round cheeks !!

Hi guys,

I have been considering trying using the hungrier baby milk at night, and normal during the day. Just to see if I can get dd beyond the 3.5 hours at night.

Has anyone else tried this ?

I've been using SMA Gold which contains LCPs (which are supposed to aid brain development). The SMA White doesn't contain this, which is why I'm a little reluctant to change completely to it. (SMA White is the hungrier baby version)

ditto mine BR - born at 8lb9, went down to 7lb 5, regained birthweight a week ago and now 10lbs 2!
I love his fat little knees... and he is growing several chins I think!
