My baby throwing up-does this mean I am feeding him too much?

DS is 7wo and EBF. He throws up small amounts of curdles milk, sometimes when burping and sometimes not. He never refuses the breast. Could I be overfeeding him? He is fed on demand.

No. Lots of babies posset a bit of milk, it's normal. If he isn't distressed with the sickiness and gaining weight ok then just invest in lots of muslins! Don't worry about overfeeding, he'll take what he needs and the best way to keep him happy is to do exactly what you are doing.

I'm a new BFing mum too to a six week old. No - my health visitor says you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. My daughter is sick all the time but it's due to wind - sometimes the whole feed!

Loving the name titty!

TittyBojangles · 23/05/2011 19:54

Thankyou Smile. A tip I read on here was to pour a teaspoon or whatever of milk on something just to prove that it really does look like more than it is. Sometimes a relatively small amount can look like LOADS!

Sorry, yes I know you can't overbred, just wondered if this sort of possetting (ie sometimes not brought up by a burp) is evidence of to much milk, ie the stuff brought up because he doesn't need as much. I realise my OP wasn't clear.

*too

Also, I know the amount he's throwing up isn't much as my elder son had reflux and threw up gallons. This is nothing in comparison! But we do have tons and tons of muslins because of the reflux!!

Overbred??? Overfeed. Combination of bad typing and autocorrect

Sounds like he's just possety, some babies just are. DD1 chucked up little mouthfuls of milk constantly, only stopping (literally overnight) when she learned to stand up. Invest in plenty of muslins and plastic-backed bibs.

If he's really being sick, you'll know about it. You won't believe how much liquid can actually come out of a small person.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 23/05/2011 20:06

Sorry sorry sorry I'm not being clear at all. I'm not worried about being sick. I was just wondering if the whole thing of bfed babies bringing up milk they don't need was what is going on. Sorry, I am very tired and not making myself clear. I'm not worried at all and gave no plans to change my feeding of him!

Not sure what you are worried about?

MigratingCoconuts · 23/05/2011 20:16

It might be Bella, or it is more likely to be a burp due to young tummy and gulping air with milk.

My first used to posset all the time for the first 6 weeks of her life. I was recommened to take her to a cranial oesteopath after her traumatic birth. We did 3 sessions and I don't if it was that or if it was because she got more mature..but it all suddenly cleared up!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 23/05/2011 20:25

I'm not worried. I'm interested.

My OP would be better if it was: I've heard that breastfed babies will bring up milk they don't need. Is what my baby is doing (possetting without a burp) an example of this?

TittyBojangles · 24/05/2011 09:24

I think everyone is trying to say that it's normal and fine (provided baby is happy and gaining weight etc), but you know this. I don't think anyone will know if that's why he's doing it, but if you're not worried about it then it doesn't really matter does it? I think I know what you are trying to say, but no one is going to know and even if someone could say that was why he was possetting then what would you do? I'm sure you're not going to start feeding him less. I don'T think you'll ever get a definative answer to your question. Hope I've not got the wrong end of the stick. Smile
