ds1 now 8 months. he's got 2 teeth at the bottom and 3 coming through at the top. he's not biting me but i think it's the sharp edges of the top teeth that is so painful. the bottom teeth didn't hurt coming through coz the tongue shields them but the top teeth are exposed to the nipple, and it feels really sharp. i'm dreading feeding him. anyhow any one had this problem and is there anything to be done?

Yes, I had this - I readjusted DS's latch and made sure that I was really careful about how he was feeding - we'd both got a bit lax about it by 8m. It does sort itself out - they get used to having the teeth and you adjust how you're holding them.

we have bottom teeth rubbage going on at the moment with my 8 month old and a proper bite tonight
most of the time his tongue sort of covers them up....but n the night, the rub......

Hi sweeney

Ouch i so know how that feels!!my dd was the same when she had any teeth top or bottom coming in.in some ways it was worse than having sore nipples when you first start out.i just had to grin and bear it till all the teeth were in.much sympathy to you gal

roosmum · 12/11/2005 19:45

ds is nine mths & bit me so hard last night he drew blood, i'm v. v. abt bf at the moment, & algach can't imagine carrying on like this - he's biting me at every feed atm! - until all the teeth are there.
help! please!

Roobie · 12/11/2005 20:00

Ds has had his 2 bottom teeth since he was 3 months old and now, at nearly 7 months, his four top teeth have appeared without warning. My nipples are periodically in a right state which seem to be caused by him sucking extremely vigorously which I put down to teething - I get the occasional nip/rub when he is slack jawed at the end of a feed. It's not much fun but we seem to be muddling through (there's no way I'm giving up anyway!).

roosmum · 12/11/2005 20:05

roobie, there's no way i want to give up either, but...but!
it hurts sooo much just now

please someone tell me it'll pass?

Roobie · 12/11/2005 20:12

I find it helps to keep on applying the lansinoh and experimenting with various positions. I notice that as he gets bigger, although he is latched on properly, he tends to 'drag' the nipple due to weight of his head.

hewlettsdaughter · 12/11/2005 20:33

I remember this with dd and it DID pass roosmum.

roosmum · 12/11/2005 20:35

HD, how long did it last, if you can remember?? (i'm kinda at the end of my patience with it )

hewlettsdaughter · 12/11/2005 21:46

Do you know, I'm not sure. It was (literally!) a pain for a while but then it didn't hurt any more (whether dd got used to feeding with teeth or I got used to it I couldn't tell you). Sorry not to be of more help. Have you looked at the kellymom site ?

Kanda · 13/11/2005 20:56

I'm going throught the same thing right now with ds2 who's 7 months and has the bottom 2 teeth, and is getting the top ones through. I try to rub some sort of teething gel on him before he feeds and it does help a lot but sometimes he bites anyway. From memory (of the others) he will stop when not in pain. Not much help but at least it doesn't seem to become a habit!

highlander · 14/11/2005 11:43

DS did this with his first 2 top and bottom teeth. I nearly gave up BF it was so sore. However, it'd a phase - only lasts a ciouple of weeks. When DS bit me, I had a cold teething on hand to pop in his mouth instead. I also used to (if I could be botered) unlatch him and pop him on the floor. No idea if that's why he stopped, or whther he just got over it by himself.

roosmum · 14/11/2005 15:02

thanks HD for the kellymom link, so much good stuff on that site! i'd forgotten it existed.
& ta highlander as well...really good to know from others that it'll most likely pass fairly quickly. ds feeding a little bit better now, still occasionally biting, but i'm sticking with it!

agalch · 15/11/2005 13:48

hi roosmum
sorry i didn't mean to scare you.it wasn't contuinally painful,it was just each time a tooth was coming through, there were times it wasn't sore.Although she is 16 months and sometimes if she doesn't want to come off i practically have to force her jaws apart with my finger to break the latch.did not think i'd still have to do that at this stage.
