Tongue tie regrowing - what now?

just back from seeing BFC at hospital to see why bf is agony.

Dd had Tongue tie cut on day 3. No improvement
Went back at 2weeks 6 days- they cut again as not done properly the first time they thought.
Bak today at 4 weeks and same woman. She was sure she'd cut it last time but it's back!

Have you experienced this?
She didn't want to cut again because of building up scar tissue.
She's getting in touch with a specialist in southampton and we may need to go there.

What are your experiences of this?

Ps with hind sight I think this is also what happened with ds but i assumed they hadnt cut it fully.

Hiya-from my experience with DS3 who is now 2½, he had his tongue tie first cut when he was around a week old, it didnt really make any difference. So we went back and the nurse said that although she could tell it wasn't properly divided, she could do no more.
So we contacted the specialist you're mentioning in Southampton and he was fantastic and invited us to come down and see him, although we lived over 150 miles away.
We went to see him a few days later and he said that the reason it hadn't divided properly is because he also had a type IV posterior tongue tie, so the one in front had been cut, but there was another one at the back that you could kind of hook your finger behind.
The long and short of it (sorry in a rush) is that he divided as much of the posterior one as he could, and DS3's feeding improved. It's not fully divided but hasn't caused him anymore problems, they will have a look at him again when he is speaking more to assess whether there is any impact on his speech.
i'm not sure that tongue tie grows back??? I've never heard that.

Do feel free to ask any other questions, hope this helps.

They can grow back but I'm not sure when they stop. I've heard of an excellent TT specialist in Southampton although I forget his name, but I know a great one in London (Ann Dobson) who travels all over if you need a private person fast.

Not sure where they stop with regards to re-snipping I mean.

Cheers all!

I don't know hen regrowth stops either. Ds probably diddle same as his snip didn't work and he was done at 5 weeks.
I think they can still be snipped at up to 6 months without ga.
Even if I quit bf tomorrow I still would like it snipped as it caused ds no end of trouble with swallowing lumpy food IMO and I have a feeling it could be responsible for any speech issues too.

Am waiting to see what my BFC and the Southampton man say.

soppy my DS was snipped at 9 months after months of BF pain and only then did he take solids. Made a huge difference. Still BFing at 11 months and planning to term bf :)

soppypreggyloon · 20/05/2011 18:38

The BFC has emailed a professor in Bristol (home) and he said snipping 3 times is out if their experience/ expertise.
Waiting on mervyn griffiths at Southampton now.

Also gotta get swabs by gp just in case it is an infection. (doubt this as ive always had pain bf)

So frustrating!

soppy - I was reading an article on TT today about a 8y/o tongue tie division - he started to get adhesions on the cut site and was given exercises to do to stop it happening. Did your BFC give you any to do with your son?

Article here

Sorry- should have said ds cut his himself after a fall at 15mo. The next day he was OBSESSED with his Tongue which is how we knew it had never been right till then. He's fine but I do worry his lack of consonants may be linked?
