Thrush in 7 week old

Hi my 7 week old has been pulling off screaming mid feed and I found White patches in his mouth so took him to the gp and she gave him drops

Now what I'm wondering is should I be treated too as gp says not just wipe nipples after feeds?

Is this wright as pharmacist seemed to think I should be treated too?

Yes, you both need to be treated. I found the drops (nystatin?) were useless, we got daktarin gel for ds and canestan cream for my nipples. You need to be treated too even if you have no symptoms as otherwise you will pass the thrush back and forth.

Print out this leaflet and take it to the doctor with you.

Yup that's the drops I have for him did u need the gel prescribed?also how long did it take to clear up as gp said ten days but then she told me that she couldn't see the White patches that even my five year old could see so im not sure on her judgment really!

Yes, or at least we did. DS3 got thrush a couple of weeks ago at 4 weeks old and he had a Daktarin oral gel and I had a Daktarin cream. I was told that if you don't treat both of you it will just get passed back between you and not clear up, as Rita says.

It only took a couple of days to work (although we used it for a week) and it was really nice to be itch-free! DS3 gave me funny looks at first though as it was orange flavoured gel and he hadn't tasted anything except milk!

I got the gel prescribed - it's not licensed for babies under 4 months as there is a choking risk if you stick a whole glob in your baby's mouth (but obviously if you're sensible you just smear a bit round the baby's mouth with your finger!) but GPs can prescribe it for younger babies - my ds was 11 days when we got it.

Took ages to clear up for us because like you they gave us nystatin first, then daktarin gel, then I had to go back and ask if I should be treated too before I got the cream. Once we started using the gel his mouth cleared in 3 or 4 days though.

Watch out for nappy rash too as this can be caused by thrush, and also needs to be treated alongside mouth and nipples to totally clear it.

What are the symptoms in the mother then itchiness? Or are there visible signs as I can't see anything but have had a few shooting pains on one side

There is a list of symptoms in the mother on that Breastfeeding Network leaflet I linked to. I didn't really have any symptoms beyond slightly itchy/pink and shiney nipples.

i found the opposite - Daktarin didnt clear it up for DS, but the Nystatin drops worked a treat, so think its just what suits your baby best.

Yes, get treated properly asap. Shooting pains means it's getting into the ducts so you need flucanazole quickly.
