This is probably a stupid question, but is it safe to get hot water from starbucks (or equivalent) for formula or should i use Evian and heat up when i am travelling (eg at airport!)

Hot water is hot water.

TBH i'd just buy ready made cartons for the airport and have box of powder in luggage.

RitaMorgan · 17/05/2011 19:50

They water needs to be above 70 degrees when the powder goes into it - not sure how you'd heat evian at an airport? Cartons are probably easier.

TittyBojangles · 17/05/2011 19:57

I might be wrong but sure I've read something on here about not using mineral water to make up bottles as its too... err... minerally? Like I said, might be wrong.

RitaMorgan · 17/05/2011 20:05

I think evian is the only bottled water that is suitable for making formula.

emsken · 17/05/2011 20:06

annoyingly she is on neocate as severe milk allergy so no ready made cartons. God this travelling malarky is stressful - haven't even left the house yet haha...

Maybe make the bottles up at home and pack them in a cool bag for travelling?

geordieminx · 17/05/2011 20:10

Starbucks would be fine

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 17/05/2011 20:10

put cooled pre-boiled water from home in a bottle?? my dd was on sma staydown for reflux and this was what we did- carried a cool bag with chiller for the water and took one of those tommee tippee 3-section powder thingys

RitaMorgan · 17/05/2011 20:23

It's generally not safe to make up formula with cold water someday - though if neocate is dairy free then maybe bacteria isn't an issue?

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 17/05/2011 21:03

Sorry for the misunderstanding, obviously then the bottle gets warmed before you add the powder, the same as a bottle of formula would be warmed before feeding. I thought the question was about which water to use when making up the formula. Cooled boiled water is safe for 24 hours as long as you keep it cool whereas most advice is a made-up bottle of formula should be used within an hour of making it.

JeelyPiece · 17/05/2011 21:36

Formula should not be made up with any kind of cold water - hot water needs to hit the powder to kill any lingering bacteria in the powder. The water has to be at least 70 degrees C.

hazeyjane · 17/05/2011 21:52

I thought neocate had to be made up with cold water?

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 17/05/2011 23:51

not sure about neocate hazeyjane but sma staydown deffo HAS to be made with cold water or it curdles. i dont get the problem with heating a bottle of previously boiled water to the required temp then mixing powder? i'm not sure i would want to give a baby a bottle of formula that had been mixed several hours earlier it would solve the op's problem of evian vs. starbucks water-as at least she would know the water was safe being the same she uses at home. i'm not sure i would want to give a baby a bottle of formula that had been mixed several hours earlier that had been hanging around in a cool bag especially if there are digestive problems.

RitaMorgan · 18/05/2011 07:24

The bacteria is in the powder rather than the water, so the guidance is to mix the powder with water that is at least 70 degrees in order to kill any bugs - I think salmonella and enterobacter are the main ones. I would think it would be quite hard to heat cold water to 70 degrees while travelling without a kettle.

RitaMorgan · 18/05/2011 07:34

Though that is for milk-based formulas - neocate may be different for all I know!

Emandwilliam · 18/05/2011 08:41

Why don't you take a flask of hot water with you and then you don't need to rely on coffee shops.

emsken · 18/05/2011 12:42

BEcause you can't take a flash of water through security at the airport? Ijn fact last month i tried to take cooled boiled water in milk bottle through securtity and they made me throw it away - luckily she didn't need a feed as i was then confused as to what to do as i couldn't find a kettle.

So does neocate need to be made up with hot or cold water?

cakeforbrains · 18/05/2011 13:16

I took Neocate already made up through security at Heathrow in Feb. I explained that it was prescription only and not available in cartons airside. They made me taste it though (bleugh)! How old is your DD, and how many feeds will she need?

hazeyjane · 18/05/2011 13:40

I think it is the thickened formulas that have to be made up with cold water, as the hot water would make it too thick. Ds was prescribed Enfamil (which is dairy based), which was best made with fridge cold water, it did bother me, as I've always been careful to follow the >70 degree water rule.

lucy101 · 18/05/2011 13:46

My baby is on Nutramigen and I always make up with 70 degrees water... which in my house is about 5 minutes after I pour hot water from the kettle into the baby's bottle (I got a thermometer and measured it). I then put in the powder, shake it and then cool by putting the bottle in cold water. I would say hot water from Starbucks would be safest (and easiest perhaps) and this is what I plan to do.

Emandwilliam · 19/05/2011 08:11

Ok brain melt of course you can't take a flask thru security.

narmada · 19/05/2011 20:55

I use boiling (after a couple of mins) water from cafes if I don't have my usual flask with me for some reason. Usually have some boiled, cooled water in seperate bottle, put hot water in another, mix powder well, add cooled water, and bingo - perfect temp and milk powder suitably in contact with hot water to kill bacteria.

I wondered the same about neocate and making it up cold when DS was on it - I am guessing it's harder for bugs to breed in it but not impossible... You would have thought the always out for a quick buck hypoallergenic non-milk manufacturers would have cottoned on to the ready-made carton thing by now - they charge the NHS enough for their powdered products!

narmada · 19/05/2011 20:56

Now wondering what I will do if we have to go to an aiport with DS while he's still on bottles.....hmm, I like my thermos. God, it was so much easier with DD (BF, no feeding issues....).

emsken · 20/05/2011 19:39

Its a stress isn'ti it! So do we all think that IF seciruty says no to the cooled boiled water in bottles (which has happened before), then it is better to use eviian warmed up or cage machine water - you know the hot water they use?!?!
