Should i switch to hungrier baby milk?

clarebear1 · 17/05/2011 11:02

My ds is 7 weeks old and having approx 5 oz every 2/2.5 hours, through the night too.

Midwife says thats fine, doctor at his 6 weeks check said thats ridiculous and leave him to cry.

Would hungrier baby milk make him go for longer? anyone any experience in the same situation. Thanks!

Please don't buy hungrier baby milk if you can help it.
Even SMA suggest not giving extra hungry formula until 6 months.

It's much harder for them to digest and whilst he may go for a bit longer, he is far more likely to get wind/tummy ache than with normal from birth formula.

This is very helpful

Other than that, try giving him a pacifier and see if it's just more sucking he needs to keep him going a bit longer.

cobweb1979 · 17/05/2011 11:39

Mine is 13 weeks and still feeds ever 2.5-3 hours! Your dr is an idiot.

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 17/05/2011 11:41

What vintage said.

It only has same calories as normal formula, but as it's harder to digest they go longer, meaning they could end up with fewer calories rather than more. [heared that n here]

Imo your doc is talking crap. Your ds's feeding sounds very normal to me...they have tiny stomachs. Gp's know nowt about babies, esp feeding.

wigglesrock · 17/05/2011 12:09

No, it won't help, dd2 (now 3) was a terrible sleeper I tried the hungrier baby formula, it didn't help at all. Dd3 is 13 weeks and has just started to stretch out a bit at night, sometimes she is up feeding every 3 hrs.

Lulumama · 17/05/2011 12:11

perfectly normal feeding pattern

what I would suggest is that if he is finishing 5 oz , then add an extra ounce to the bottle for each feed

hungry baby milk is really only for babies draining a 9 oz bottle every hour and even then, probably more milk would do the trick.

leaving a 6 week old to cry for food is stupid and dangerous advice

RitaMorgan · 17/05/2011 15:11

How much does he weigh? That does sound like a large amount of milk for a 7 week old baby - 50oz a day?

I second the dummy suggestion though, maybe he really likes to suck!

Emandwilliam · 17/05/2011 15:57

I agree, your doctor is an idiot!

I wouldn't feed hungry baby formula- just makes it hard for them to go to the loo, which will cause more upset.

Your ds could be going through a growth spurt hence feeding 24/7. I spoke to my health visitor about formula feeding....basically the guidelines on the tin are there to make sure you don't under feed. If your ds wants an extra oz each feed then go ahead....however if he's sick after you will know it's too much. But feeding every 2 hours is not abnormal.

anonMum2 · 17/05/2011 16:15

I wouldn't recommend personally. DS1 used to have 40oz+ at 7 weeks. Growth spurt till 6 months - born 50th centile and was on 98th centile height at 10 weeks. So perfectly possible and fine depending on why your DS is demanding so much.

Hungry milk is awful, made my poor DS1 scream in pain whenever I tried to switch him to hungry milk. THen I made up my mind that if he needs milk, he's getting milk even though HV told me to leave him to cry too. Glad I trusted my own instincts because he was deinitely having a huge growth spurt during those months.

clarebear1 · 17/05/2011 16:30

Thanks for all your advice.

I got him weighed last week and he was 11lb 5oz (born at 7lb 14oz). Health visitors wasnt concerned with his weight though.

Doc did actually quote " put him ina room to cry and pour yourself a large gin and tonic" slightly joking though im hoping.

I do try him with the dummy in between but he is a misery guts. He only really goes longer if he is asleep. He is still ickle i suppose, maybe im trying to rush him into a set older routine.

Some babies will take 4/5 ounces at a time, more frequently and others will take a full 8oz and then sleep for hours.

I think people who bottle feed tend to think that it's a definite given that formula makes them sleep longer and breast not as long.

It's really not the case and some babies just can't take much at a time.

japhrimel · 17/05/2011 22:27

I'd talk to the HV about how much he's drinking. Just had a peek at [http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/formula/howmuchmilk/#4 this info] and from that it does seem like 5oz every 2-2.5 hours throughout the day (so 10-12 feeds of 5oz) is too much formula for a baby of that weight.

I wouldn't suggest leaving him to cry, but maybe try others ways to soothe him so he doesn't get too much formula?

Is he climbing weight centiles? If not, maybe he has a fast metabolism or is going through a growth spurt?

My baby boy is 6 weeks old, he eats 6oz every 1-3 hours at day/night.( i feed him whenever he asks) Im thinking to get him onto hungry baby formula as no mater what amount he eats, feeding time pattern just never changes, i assume him eating 6oz should make him last longer inbetween feeds. And lets just not forget that hes only 6 weeks and taking in 6oz is a lot but he holds those in pretty well. At night time eats every 3 hours but tends to leave a bit in the bottle, any other feed the bottle is empty, i dont want to move him onto 7oz just yet 😅 asked my health visitor for advice she said to not change his formula until 7oz but those formula tubs are just emptying too fast.😅 what should i do?

Shelley54 · 24/10/2018 09:12

@Mairita please just feed your baby. The idea that you’re having to buy formula frequently so want to reduce the feeds is really sad. Hungry Baby food is not good for them, and you’d be amazed how many people reckon they need to use it. Babies are hungry. Just feed them.

Peyton19 · 26/05/2019 21:31

My baby is 6 weeks old today taking 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours 3 hours at a push night she wa 6lb 11oz at birth health visitor has said her weight is on the scale and she is putting on but I feel that maybe at 6 weeks old she should be on more milk and not so often or is that not the case ... this is my first baby & she is formula fed

dementedpixie · 27/05/2019 10:59

2-3 hours is normal at that age.

Peden19 · 08/11/2020 15:56

Hey I have a wee boy he’s 3 weeks old and he’s on first infant milk he’s taken 8 bottles a day at 4/5 oz and still seems hungry and unsettled, I don’t really want to up the feed but he’s finishing the bottle and wanting more but he’s had spit up a few times so don’t know if I’m over feeding? He was Combe fed having 4 breast milk then formula at night but since not having breast milk he seems unsettled and more hungry, should I try hungry baby? Any advice would be amazing

Manpz09 · 26/01/2021 00:24

Hi guys!

Need some advise on my 7 week LG! She seems to be hungry all the time, and feeds regular. She is also a night owl so sleeps late and sometimes this would take hours!!! And she would wake up soo often, this has slowly got better and it was at at point where she was barely napping in the day too, longest nap would be 45 mins, and I was so sleep deprived.

She was mainly on Aptamil organic and we switched to Aptamil comfort for 1.5 week as it ran out and we bulk bought organic. The reason I got the comfort one was that she was showing signs of colic, and spoke to the gp about this too as she would cry hours at night. I then changed this to the regular aptamil on the weekend and she seems to be sleeping better however it takes a while to put her to bed and she seems to always be hungry!

What’s the best advice?

Should I switch to another brand now?
I been advised to look at cow and gate hungry baby or Aldi Mamia!

Thank you!

@Manpz09 is she finishing all her bottles? How often is she eating?
