Please help - I'm away from DD for a week and my electric breast pump has died

Have now been bf-ing for close to 16 months. Manual expressing doesn't work. Can someone please reassure me that my supply will not dwindle / my milk ducts will be OK?

How much longer will you be away? By manual do you mean a manual pump or hand expressing?

You know this, but OK supply may dip but she sort it out when you get back. Blocked ducts, meh just see what happens and then face it if it happens. You may not get milk out, but massaging if any start to appear. Of course keep an eye out for symptoms of mastitis.

madwomanintheattic · 17/05/2011 04:07

where are you? why can't you get another one?

rainbowweaver · 17/05/2011 04:52

Am in San Diego atm, just arrived :( and found that my (UK) pump apparently needs a higher voltage than they have here. Either that of they've suddenly conked out for no reason other than a bumpy ride in my suitcase.

Going to see if can find a manual pump somewhere....

After a looong flight, boobs are a bit hard too!

PA! I meant hand expressing - a bit desperate Grin ah well.

Well I'm 4 hours up the coast if you're desperate you can borrow mine. Might be easier just to buy one though. I have a electric (medela swing) and a manual. UK and US run on different voltages so often need more than just a plug adapter but also a transformer. All the big stores will have manuals :) and any baby store will have an electric.

ps welcome to the states (sorry about the poor weather, we're having a UK week)

rainbowweaver · 17/05/2011 05:05

:) thanks PA. If really desperate and can't find one in the stores tmrw might just take you up on the offer Grin If I was better organised should've done a proper swing by. Weather not too bad, though agreed it's worse than the UK, which has been sunny all April and much of May.

What emotional BF issues are you having?

oh I've kinda weaned DD I think. We'll see how it goes but that and pg are not good for the hormones Grin

To be fair I think the UK is also having rain this week.

You should have been here earlier we've had some lovely weather as well. I love that when it rains we get emails from the uni to warn us to protect our labs etc. They like to over react with the weather here. Any chance of rain and there's sandbags everywhere, but at least the spiders aren't really out yet.

I read about someone feeding newborn from one boob and toddler from the other....the thing is to be consistent so that each boob adjusts to each baby's needs - since newborn and toddler needs different milk make-up.

Weaning is hard, and today has made me realise I'm not quite ready yet - had been thinking about whether or not given it's almost 16 months already. I'd only been planning to go for 6 months originally!

The hotel here has furniture which cannot get wet out in the garden for the guests to enjoy! You can't have been having that much rain...!

I didn't expect to wean but it hurts (a lot) and supply has virtually gone. Decided if she woke we would just try and a quick resettle and she has so far gone off straight away. We might revisit when milk returns or when the baby is here, trying to stay open minded and not define it one way or the other.

rain and amounts is all relative. Generally we're spoilt and the locals class overcast as bad weather Grin

right I'm off home, have fun on your trip (and tell us any good things as we're heading that way soon)

rainbowweaver · 17/05/2011 17:48

It's harder when it's unexpected, isn't it?

What's good here? La Jolla village, San Diego zoo, and museums in Balboa park could be a target if I had more time, Carlsbad flower fields. Legoland ;)

MaeMobley · 17/05/2011 18:51

Was going to say. Go to Walmart and buy a cheap pump.

V cheap.
