Allergic reaction

Hi,

my DS has been on hipp organic baby formula for the past two months, after I stopped BFing. He's always had just that one brand, until last week when I couldn't get hold of it so bought a tub of SMA.

Since buying that tub, I have come out in an aggressive allergic rash. I haven't changed anything in my diet, or any washing powders. I've literally done nothing different except start to handle this milk powder.

The doc has given me some tablets, but he was a bit miffed about it too.

It seems strange to me that one milk powder would cause an allergic reaction, as they're all pretty much the same, right? I have never in my life had an allergic reaction to anything, and I just can't think of anything else it could be.

Has anyone else found this?

Ta

(I'm asking this because I'm concerned about the quality of the formula, and whether feeding it to my DS is a bad idea...)

They are all pretty much the same but do not all use exactly the same sources for the individual components somenuse animal and other vegetable fats pfor example. Also Hipp organic does not contain any LCPs (Omega-3 etc) as ther is no organic form available.

Are you allergic to fish?

RitaMorgan · 14/05/2011 21:21

That was my thought too - maybe you're allergic to the fish in it? I think SMA smells a lot fishier than other formulas, though that might not have much relevance.

islandbaby · 14/05/2011 23:07

Hmmm, no. Not allergic to ANYTHING before this, but the doc said it's definitely an allergic reaction.

Best to be on the safe side and just not use it anymore.

I didn't know that about HIPP. I guess that makes it inferior to the others, as LCPs are pretty valuable, right?

I'm not sure there's any conclusive evidence that LCPs are beneficial actually - it's impossible to replicate the fatty acids in breastmilk anyway. LCPs aren't mandatory in formula milk.

MummyBerryJuice · 15/05/2011 06:22

There is absolutely no evidence that the inclusion of LCPs are in anyway beneficial, in fact, if there where it would be mandatory to include them. HIPP is in no way inferior to the others.

Thanks for clarifying that.
