Extremely smelly poos on 15 week old baby

Hi, I wonder if anyone could hemp me understand the cause. My DD is 15 weeks old, and her poo absolutely stinks, although she is EBF, which means it shouldn't. We are talking liquidized rotten vegetables type of smell.

I am really surprised, as EBF poo is not smelly, and indeed my DSs nappies were positively fragrant in comparison (slightly yogurty and sweet).

She also has issues with trapped wind, which tends to keep me up half the night while she strains and wriggles, and I wonder if the two symptoms are related.

Maybe it's caused but my diet, but I eat fairly varied and normal stuff, and it seems to make no difference.

Any thoughts or ideas very welcome. Should I be worried?

Has it only just started? If so could be a stomach bug.

If not, could be a reaction to something you're eating - most common culprits IIRC are dairy products, egg, soya. I've probably missed something there.

Hi Narmada, thanks for your reply.

The truth is that she's been stinky and windy for quite a while. I don't eat many eggs because my other son is allergic to them, and don't drink lots of milk either...

I wonder if I should start some sort of exclusion diet, which I really don't fancy, sob.

Truth is, my eldest is allergic to eggs, but when I ate them while BF it did not seem to affect his wind or poo. Mind you, he did have eczema...

When ds had awful nappies it was a virus and he had it for about a month.

pacita · 12/05/2011 16:05

Albrecht, but was there any other symptoms? My DD has no temperature, weight loss or discomfort other than wind... She is currently happily gurgling at herself as we speak.

He had a rash after a while, which was when I took him to the doctors. I thought it was eczema as I get it but doc said it was reaction to virus and then it clicked about the smell. Gastroenteritis without any puking or weight loss. Just kept bf and he was fine eventually.

Does it look weird as well as stinking?

WishIWasRimaHorton · 12/05/2011 17:10

what colour is her poo? is she gaining weight normally? all that discomfort could indicate some form of GI problem. a friend whose baby was lactose intolerant had stinky green poo and she also had loads of gripey tummy pains. but she wasn't gaining weight either - in fact she was mostly losing it.

pacita · 12/05/2011 17:50

Hi, just back from nursery.

Her poo is mustardy and quite liquid. It used to be a brighter yellow and have little milk curdles before, but not for a while. Her weight gain is fine, and she is exclusively breast fed. Her only other symptom seems to be uncomfortable wind.

Today, she has also been quite fussy at the breast, but this is probably unrelated.

I'm puzzled!

My DS has really really stinky poo when I eat cauliflower. A friend noticed the same with her baby.

ninja · 12/05/2011 22:53

lots of foremilk? but that would make the poo green - I'm not sure if it would affect the smell ....

pacita · 13/05/2011 12:56

Hi Ninja, thanks for posting!! yes, I thought about too much foremilk and lactose problems, but she does drain the first breast... Still a mystery. Had a marginally less windy night last night, though, which is good news.

Any other ideas? Any other stinky EBF stories to make me feel better Grin?

pacita i too have a baby with stinky poo and wind. he's 14 weeks. for the last 3/4 days he's had bright orange stinky poo that exploded out of the sides of his nappies. he's gone from 2-3 poos per day to 1 every two days, so i wondered if that was why the smell - a change in bowel behaviour.

he's also got bad farts and sometimes gets v.upset if he's got a gassy stomach.

i don't know the answer either, but i'm hoping it goes away soon, as the smell could clear a building!

pacita · 13/05/2011 21:55

Doris, I like the change in bowel behavior theory. Your DS sounds exactly like mine except for the orange poo. Is it quite liquid?

it looks like peanut butter [boak]

pacita · 14/05/2011 09:31

My goodness, that's positively solid! We have cream of vegetables consistency. I have to report a slight improvement in this morning's produce though. There is hope!

My ebf baby had very stinky, usually exploding poos until she went onto solids and now she has perfectly formed solid 'adult' poos that don't stink anywhere near as much. The smell and consistency changed over the 5 months until onto solids, presumably as her digestive system was developing, she also wenbt through a very farty phase, though she was perfectly healthy throughout.

Hi Pacita

I know this is a long shot as this thread is 10 years old but did you ever find the answer to the wind and stinky pumps. As I have a 15 week old baby with the exact same problem.

Any help would be great?

DanielleL93 · 06/03/2022 13:04

Was hoping for an answer to this too. My DD is EBF and only pooping every few days but used to poop everyday. Her farts smell really bad and her poop she did todays smelt awful. She’s smelling fine and feeding alot but I’m not sure if she’s teething already
