What do you need when feeding?

I want to make a present for my sister of all the "stuff" you seem to need when you are sitting feeding (and usually don't have!). Can you help me remember what you always wish you had near you eg. phone, drink, watch etc.

An insulated mug is a good idea as you never get a hot cup of tea.
A friend bought me some nice 'nuts' which were good nibbles and easy to eat one handed.
A cope of Kate Evans' ' The Food of Love'
phone, remote controller

chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate Smile

Let me share my perfect new mum brekfast with you - porridge with raisins for all that dull complex carb energy stuff and a Mars for the sugar hit Grin

Good idea of easy, healthy, one-handed snacks. I was forever starving and knowing I was sitting down for a session would often grab biccies - and wondered why the weight wasn't dropping off even though I was feeding a huge boy! So I second bags of nuts/seeds/fruit, healthy snack/cereal bars, bottles of smoothies/juice (to prevent constipation).

For entertainment, some good books or mags, DVD's (series are good; I've already got my Mom's ER box set lined up for October, or if she likes sex and the city etc).

The insulated mug is a great idea crikeybadger - you could get her this or a fancy cup/lid/straw combo (think Starbucks have one for sale), which she could keep filled up in the frisge ready to grab when sitting down for a feed. Means she gets enough to drink and less likely to spill!

A breastfeeding cushion if she hasn't already got one

A small nightlight for night feeds. I used ot scoop my sons into the bed and feed next to hubby, and in the first few weeks you need to be able to see to help them latch on, so I got a small glow light which was enough to see by, but not enough to be harsh for me or wake hubby. If you're feeling really generous a radio/ipod with headphones in case she's wide awake doing night feeds!

Just do the ironing and bring around the evening meal a couple of times. That would be the best present I could have had.

Without being facetious though, I'd get her some freezer meals and if budget stretches far enough then a couple of hours with a cleaner each week for a few weeks.

If you can afford it, I would get her a kindle - I got to read so many books in the first few months.

Emzar · 11/05/2011 20:13

I agree, my partner bought me a Kindle as a breastfeeding present and it's fantastic. I don't think I'd have been able to read books with no hands free to turn pages, but you can turn the page on a Kindle with a little finger. :)

AngelDog · 11/05/2011 21:01

I agree with the freezer meals idea. Oatcakes make a good healthy snack.

I wouldn't be without my iPod. It sits on my knee while I feed and I can email, listen to music, play games, use facebook, and there's mumsnet of course!

I've been making up thermos flasks of herbal tea. Stays very hot for hours and I always have a cup to hand.

Thinking of kindle too.

I have a little breastfeeding bag (just a washbag that came free with some make-up) that has followed me round the house (or been fetched by DP!) as i'm breastfeeding. In it I've got

  • nipple cream (Lanisoh stuff in purple bottle - I started using this from my very first feed 13 weeks ago and have had no problems at all with cracked or bleeding nipples)
  • nice hand cream (as I seem to be constantly washing my hands and they are really dry)
  • muslin cloth
  • breast pads
  • lip balm
  • cereal bars and fruit (the cereal bars are replenished daily - the fruit seems to last a little longer!)

Oh and having TV remotes on hand at all times!
