Blocked nipple? Advice needed, am in agony and can't get a g.p appointment today!

I've been breastfeeding a year with no problems. This morning, I noticed one of the holes in my nipple had gone more of a white colour than the other holes around it (don't know what the holes are called, sorry). Then a few hours later, I noticed a big section of that breast going really hard and it is now rock hard and really hurting. I've been trying to feed on that side but it's just getting worse,

I've had a good look and that particular hole is going more and more white (as if all the colour has drained from it) and absolutely no milk is coming out of that hole, all the others are fine. It looks like the hole has a clear blister type thing over it, like it is completely sealed up.

I've tried massaging it and trying to break this strange seal that has appeared with warm water and pushing it gently but it wont budge.

Does anyone have any advice? I really am in pain now and my damn gp has no appointments today.

How can I break the seal to release the milk without injuring myself or causing an infection? Why is this one hole going so white? how do I get the milk out so I don't end up with mastitis?

Please help!!

Sounds like a bleb - advice here from kellymom.

OK, this is not medical advice, but what I used to do with milk blisters, is sterilise a needle (with hot water or a flame) and use it to scrape the blister off Shock

the backed-up milk would then be able to gush out....

it was the only thing that worked, but BE VERY CAREFUL!

Thank you so much for your quick replies, thank god for mumsnet! Just sterilised a needle, scraped away (didn't need much) and I am cured! Still feel a little tender but the backed up milk is now out.

I thought I had read everything there was to read about breastfeeding but I'd never come across milk blisters before.

Ouch. They really hurt. It's normal to feel a bit bruised and tender for a couple of days where the milk backed up, don't worry. Feed from that side as normal, keep an eye on it to make sure it's definitely draining properly and I hope it's your only encounter with milk blisters.

Glad it is sorted. I had this last week and gp popped the blister. She thought it could develop into mastitis. Give that boob a good massage and v warm water from shower head.
