Saw an ad today for 'clever milk', that's enriched with omega 3, with prof winston holding up a bottle. Got me wondering why the ultimate clever milk, breastmilk, isn't promoted in newspapers & other media. Suppose because you can't buy it.

Exactly.Exactly.

Actually, read in the ST that he's had a bollocking for this from several organisations including the Food Standard's Agency.

I'm surprised at him actually. Thought he was above all this.
St Ivel? Purveyors of shitty yoghurts??
FFS!!

moondog · 08/11/2005 19:59

Food Standards Agency rather...

wordgirl · 08/11/2005 20:15

Ooh, I bought some of that milk the other day! As far as I know it's just semi-skimmed milk with added omega 3 oils. Is there something else I don't know about it?
And I have also recently seen a TV advert promoting breastfeeding - it does talk about breast milk being the most perfect food you can give your baby etc. Has nobody else seen it?

gemma97 · 08/11/2005 20:25

Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't want to see a picture of Robert Winston holding his own, or anybody else's breasts....that's why he isn't promoting breastfeeding! ;)

moondog · 08/11/2005 20:27

wordgirl....no!
(Mind you don't watch tv though.)
Was it a good ad??

wordgirl · 08/11/2005 20:37

It is a good ad moondog. My memory is rubbish but as I recall it starts off by saying something like there is a food that is nutritionally perfect for your baby and that it can protect your baby from various diseases. It then goes on to say how it's free etc and then at the end you see a young mum feeding her baby with a young chap standing next to her in a supportive manner.
Ironically, when it begins you think it's going to be an advert for Cow & Gate so I think it is quite well done!
I live in Yorkshire but get Tyne Tees television so I think it must be a Tyne Tees thing. I can't believe no-one else has seen it.

Not seen the bf ad wordgirl - do you know who pays for it to go on tv?
moondog - good point
gemma - lol !!

Yes, i've seen that breastfeeding ad too, it's good.

milward · 08/11/2005 21:11

Angeliz - tell me more about it - wish it was in the newspapers & mags.

Angeliz · 08/11/2005 21:13

I've seen it twice on T.V, it says that there is a food which is nutritionally perfect for your child and about the protection it offers and that it's free and then at the end there is a young mums sitting breastfeeding.
I thought at the time that mumsnetters would love it!!

Angeliz · 08/11/2005 21:13

It's not big or flash, just parents and baby and facts.

milward · 08/11/2005 21:14

Thanks angeliz - will see if I can see it sometime!

Angeliz -Just checked on the www & got some info. Sounds a great campaign - hope the idea is taken up by all the networks.

Phew, thank goodness someone else has seen it - I was beginning to think I had imagined it

Angeliz · 08/11/2005 21:38

\link{InFocus LP540\think} this is it....scrool down

Angeliz · 08/11/2005 21:39

hmmmmmmmmm

suzi2 · 08/11/2005 22:38

I have seen a lot of similar ads on Scottish TV. Although, I have heard that only 12% of women are breastfeeding past 10wk in my area. So perhaps they aren't working.

expatinscotland · 08/11/2005 22:43

That milk tastes AWFUL! How about buying organic - which is richer in Omega 3s, anyhow, and the animal is treated better as well?

wordgirl · 08/11/2005 22:52

expatinscotland, I only bought it because the supermarket didn't have any organic milk but I didn't really think it tasted any different

expatinscotland · 09/11/2005 09:07

I found it tasted fishy. Ditto the eggs. Then I found out organic milk is rich in Omega 3s - cool! Kill two birds w/one stone, so to speak.

oliveoil · 09/11/2005 09:16

Frankinstein food, there is a lot of it about.

Has anyone seen those buns that have cheese in the middle of them????? WTF? They had a Scav's Corner (as I call them) in Asda with a woman handing them out free and she tried to give dd1 some so I just said 'er, no thank you'.

Not sure what use a ad for b/feeding would do to up the number of people feeding this way, they have all this information already in hospital and mags etc and still the take up is low.

Em32 · 09/11/2005 09:48

Pretty sure that you'll find that tv ad is a government funded one (like the smoking gives you blood clots one that's on at the moment) There is a whole section of the Department of Health that commissions these things and does all the leaflets/posters etc etc.
Robert Winston will have done the omega 3 milk ad for the money I'm afraid! And....he probably does believe in the product or I don't think he would have done it. That isn't to say that breastmilk isn't obviously the best drink for little ones, just that he gets paid for promoting something with fish oils in it. It isn't that bad a thing for him to do IMO.
