Advice on why my 2 month old comes off breast all the time

Over the last 3 weeks, my 3 month old often takes a few sucks and then comes off the breast but immediately latches himself back on, then does the same repeatedly. My nippes are beginning to hurt and feeding takes longer than usual. It is happens more when we are out and the latter feeds of the day. If I try to keep him latched on he struggles and twists his head round and manages to unlatch himself anyway but this hurts me more. Sometimes he has wind, but usually if he does have wind, he pulls at my nipple and wriggles around more than usual. He is a wriggly baby and wriggles a lot when feeding anyway so feeding is now hard work for me just when I thought it would be getting easier. He has a bottle once a day and has done since he was 2 weeks old.

Has anyone experienced this and knows why and what to do about it?

Is his nose blocked up at all? That's probably not it, but first thing I thought of.

This has been happening with my 3 month old in the last 10 days too. It's often wind and after a burp he will latch on properly. I've also found that swapping breasts helps even if it means going left, right, left in the same feed!

No, his nose isn't blocked up but I see your thinking with that.

Thrush makes them come off all the time. Check his tongue for a white coating.

I will keep winding then and swap breasts too. Thank you. It's a real pain when we are out because it is much harder to be discreet too and I hate bf when out although I do it a lot, I still feel self conscious about it unless I'm at a group for him or something.

Hate to say it but my 6mo still does this all the time. I reckon it's maybe to do with stimulating a further let down?

My 3mo old does this too. Only way I've been able to prevent it is to try and make her go a bit longer between feeds, ie make sure she's properly hungry. Agree with bouncychair that swapping breasts can help.

my son did this when he was about 3months also, I think it was due to the let down not happening quick enough. If you have distractions eg other children, husbands, pets and even TV turn off/go to different room and relax! I know its easier said than done but it really worked for me. I calm happy mum = a calm happy baby. Well done on the bf !

It could be thrush - DS had exactly the same symptoms at about 2 months old. He didn't have any white spots in his mouth though, so it took a while for it to be spotted. Have you had any shooting pains in your breasts at all? That was how my HV ended up diagnosing it. I went to the GP and got a cream for me and some medicine for him, and it cleared up in about a week.

Have a chat to your HV or GP. Also, this link might help

My 6mo has done this too for a couple of months and I'm sure it's down to a slower let down now... I used to feel a let down as soon as he latched on near enough, and now it takes a good few attempts from him first. Milk supply is fine though, I'm just presuming it's something to do with my supply being closely matched to his needs now so I am rarely bursting with milk which used to happen in the first couple of months.
