baby prefers pacifier to breast??

My DS is 8 weeks today, and we started using a pacifier a couple of weeks ago because there are times (usually when he is very tired and cranky) that he refuses the breast and cries when he is put on the breast (although he roots for it and latches), but will settle when given the pacifier. Is this normal??

He probably just wants to comfort suck sometimes without getting any milk - so long as he is still feeding well/frequently I wouldn't worry.

Agree wit Rita, as long as baby is still having plenty of wet/dirty nappies and is happy and content. Then he probably just want's to suck without having milk.

Some babies like dummies other's don't.

My DD is the same - would cry and fuss at the breast. Have bow worked out it's because she has reflux and she wasn't needing wing fed but wanted to suck for comfort.

So she would cry, I would think she is hungry, try to feed her, shed fuss and go ridged, through her head back and scream and scream - latch back on and do it again and again - give her a dummy and e just settles instantly - now she has gaviscon we hardly now have this.

My DS does this. He'll latch on but then get annoyed when milk comes out. He's found his hand but his co-ordination isn't great yet so he gets frustrated when he's trying to suck his hand and it's flying about all over the place! So we give him a dummy.

I always try to feed him first though, just to make sure it's not hunger.

DS used to get like this when overtired. I used to offer him a finger to suck, which would calm him down and then I'd pop him on the breast with as short a transition as possible between finger / breast, and he'd then happily feed, often feeding to sleep.

As he got older, I found he was more and more likely to properly take the breast when he was in a state.

I started to use dummy but find it very confusing to recognise whether he wants to feed or whether he wants dummy because he gives the same clues: sucking lips, turning head, shaping his lips...
please let me know how you overcome these problems? would really appreciate your advice. my baby is 8 weeks old
