Large nipples

DS is now 4 weeks old. After having early problems with bfing, I saw a lactation consultant (who came highly recommended and who has been fantastic so far). She told me that because my nipples (not the areola - just the actual nipple bit) are so large, DS can't get enough of the areola in his mouth to stimulate the milk to flow properly (his little mouth is so full with my actual nipple that not enough of the areola fits in).

So she advised pumping to keep up my milk supply - initially every 2 hours for a week or so and then as my supply increased I could go to every 3 hours and then every 4. It was hellish at the start but now doing every 3 or 4 hours and have a really good supply (way more than DS drinks).

I have to feed DS with my milk from a bottle and try him on the breast once a day and also if he was uneasy and wanted to suck. Lactation consultant firmly believes that sometimes between 4 and 6 weeks (or possibly up to 2 months), DS should latch on well and I should be able to bf properly. She said that because I bf immediately after the birth and bf only for the first 10 days (was not expressing then at all) I shouldn't worry about nipple confusion and actually when DS is at the breast, he does do some swallowing (partic when i do compressions) and latches on and does seem happy and content there. And sometimes he definitely refuses a bottle on favour of breast (obviously jot that hungry then and wants to suck).

Just finding it hard to stay positive and optimistic that this will work out and that DS will drink milk straight from me. Have this feeling that I'm going to be pumping forever... And keep telling myself to be patient and wait for DS' little mouth to get bigger

Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone else with large nipples? Thank you so much!

well done for keeping going - you sound like you're doing brilliantly :)
I haven't had the same thing but I did get sore nipples at first because ds wouldn't open his tiny mouth wide enough. They do grow quickly though and things got much easier for me at about 7 weeks.
I hope things work out for you

I have large nipples. It wasn't a problem with DD she was a big baby and was big enough to cope.

But to my supprise seconed time round DS was a lot smaller baby, he also has a slight TT which didn't help. But for almost every feed for the first 6-8week's I had a struggle to make sure he was latched on right. Almost never happened first time. It took this long for him to get bigger and open his mouth wide enough to just latch first time and go with it. Luckly for me I trianed as a BfN helper before he was born and new he wasn't latching well, it was also me who spotted the TT.

I would suggest have you tired a SNS (supplimentry nursing system) this way you can feed him at the breast or use it as a finger feeder, just to make sure he doesn't preffer the bottle to much.

Well done!! I have large nipples and, despite input from lactation consultants, LLL, MW, and infant feedign co-ordinator, I coudl never get a proper latch. I never managed to express that much - it hurt like hell, everythign swelled up and not that much came out. Both DD and I had health problems after the birth and these probably interfered with BF. Managed to get some into her every day for 7 weeks and then gave up. It was just all too much. Think you are amazing - be proud and enjoy!!!

Thank you so much for your supportive responses.

MigGril - DS was also big. 4kg (not sure what that is in lbs). But unfortunately still is having trouble getting everything he should in his mouth. Sad

Marzipan - hope things will sort themselves out for me at 7 weeks too!

And Cardamom - so sorry to hear about your experience. I can imagine just how you feel. It's so frustrating isn't it? I was devastated when DS stopped putting on weight and just cried and cried when I had to start this whole pumping process.

I have big nipples and my LO can't get a whole lot of areola in her mouth, she also tends not to open her mouth very wide. However, at 6 weeks we're doing fine and it's since I stopped stressing about trying to get her to do the classic latch on thing... I've just let her find her own latching on method and it seems to work fine, I can hear her gulping and she's putting on weight (about 30 grams a day). She hoovers my nipple in a bit but after a couple of days and liberal use of Lansinoh they toughened up sufficiently. I also started using the clutch hold rather than the across your body ones, supposed to be better if you have big boobs.

Good luck!

That's good to hear AllBellyandBoobs. Yes the lactation consultant told me to try the underarm/rugby/football hold - think that's the clutch hold you refer to. Found it much easier.

So did your LO feed from you straightaway or did you also have to express?
