8 wks in and breastfeeding still not 'right'

Ds2 is 8wks today. Happily I've been breastfeeding (i couldn't with Ds1 but that's a whole other thread....suffice to say I'm really happy and proud to be doing it this time!) However, I still don't feel like its going brilliantly, for the first 3ish weeks it felt like Ds had a really good latch, I had very little nipple soreness etc. But I'm still getting engorged every 2 or 3 nights, getting shooting pains in one boob more than the other and one nipple has a couple of pale pink spots with a tiny scab. It feels like Ds latch has got, well, 'lazy', just attaching to the nipple and if I try to reposition he fights it until he eventually wins or falls asleep because he's had 'just enough' while we've been battling! Plus I'm really starting to feel exhausted with it. He is putting weight on really well and I seem to have a lot of milk (pumped off 5oz the other day in less than 4 mins) with an extremely fast let down so I don't know if that's causing issues? He is going roughly 3 hours between feeds and generally 'empties'one breast.....what am I doing wrong? Why still uncomfy? Thankyou.

Congrats on your DS and brilliant job with the BF.

Have you thought about going to a babycafe or ringing NCT/La leche league just to see if a bf counsellor or similar could help with the latch? It might be something simple that someone watching your latch could assist with to make everything more comfy.

BTW am v Envy with your expressing. I could only get 1 oz in about 15 mins this morning - just so I had some for DS's baby rice :)

Hope someone with more knowledge etc comes along soon.

Thanks zimbomum, I have no idea what's normal and what isn't really but I'm sure I should be more comfortable by now.

It took me 10 weeks to feel right with my youngest, despite her being DC5.

Would agree with zimbo tho about getting someone to check it.

you may have thrush! I had occasional shooting pains in my breasts and vague nipple soreness but incredibly sensitive nipples. baby didn't have spots in his mouth but had a white sheen to his tongue and roof of mouth. he fussed when he fed and would pull off and intentionally re-latch himself shallowly. it took me a while to go the the GP because my symptoms just weren't clear (i thought thrush was very painful /burning nipples throughout the feed etc). May be worth seeing your gp to get it checked!

I was thinking possible thrush too.
