How do you stop bf at 12 months?

Hi all,

thanks to lots of fab advice on MN, I have managed to bf my DS up to 11 months. Have loved the whole experience, appreciate that I am lucky in that I was able to with no horror stories, but I am ready to stop once he turns one. Any advice? How do you introduce goats milk? He has never really taken a bottle, does drink from cups though. How much goats milk does he need? Any tips appreciated.

Thanks

just use a cup
why goats milk?

marzipananimal · 07/05/2011 10:07

Glad it's gone well for you :)
Use cup not bottle - babies are supposed to be off bottles by a year anyway I think.
Can't he have cows milk?
I'm afraid I don't know about quantity - maybe just offer it at times when he would normally have a bf?

goat's milk is totally vile, makes me retch just to sniff it and would never ever manage to ingest any so please don't think your baby is goinjg to swap from lovely sweet tasty cuddly breat milk to this vile stuff. cow's milk is at least tasty

crikeybadger · 08/05/2011 22:40

so you're not a fan of goat's milk then sleeplessinderbyshire Wink

Marking thread as wondering the same thing - though planning to switch to full-fat cow milk (though organic dahhhling) .

I have tasted my breast milk, it is incredibly sweet which is probably why ds jumps up and down shrieking with excitement when I undo my bra.

My mum was like Hmm, she said she'd never seen a baby so excited about milk, and she'd breastfed two. Grin

Hope I can help: I'm trying to wind down BF my 9 month old DD, it hasn't been entirely plain sailing but we're getting there. After getting advice from a friend I've just offered formula every mealtime in small quantities in her normal sippy cup. She has always hated formula (you go girl!) and I considered going straight to cow's milk but apparently before a year it can cause mild intestinal bleeding so that was a big no. Anyway after 3-4 weeks of offering aptamil she's finally started taking small amounts. I tried others and think they're all much of a muchness but other mums suggested that brand. So I'm nearly ready to go back to work in 3 weeks time with a clear conscience as I was feeling very guilty about stopping if she wasn't settled on formula and we are getting there slowly. I suggest getting him used to a sippy cup or doidy cup first and then offer formula/cow's milk, I imagine cow's milk will be more popular but expect it to take a while and expect some funny faces on the way!

oh my, I must have been a bit doo-lally when i started this, I meant cows milk. no idea where the goat came from - Confused. Apologies. DS will be starting on cows milk, to clarify. He already has it on cereal each morning.

So concensus is just give cows milk from a cup? Right will try that. Any idea where I can get advice on quantities. He eats quite well, has cheese and yoghurt (full fat) daily plus fruit veg cereal egg/fish/meat etc.

From 12 months they need about 350ml milk a day, but that includes cheese and yoghurt.

matilda - I haven't heard that about intestinal bleeding before, do you have any links?

Thanks for this thread - DD is 10 months, has never taken a bottle and isn't overly keen on a cup either (although we've only tried water in it and not formula yet). I'm back at work in about 6 weeks so need to tackle this now but haven't been sure what to do so the advice here is helpful, I want to carry on BF for the morning and bedtime feeds (and no doubt the overnight feeds as well but that's a different issue!).

Albrecht · 11/05/2011 10:23

We are trying expressed bm in the cup first to get him used to how it works.

RJandA · 11/05/2011 15:28

Beancounting, my DD was/is bf and we offered water in a lidded cup from 6 months but she never used to drink that much.

At about 11.5 months I started putting cow's milk in a cup and she suddenly seemed to get the hang of it - maybe the milk made the effort a bit more worth it, but anyway, now she is 14 months and has nearly all her drinks from a cup (one bf a day cos it's just too lovely to stop!)

So if I were you then I would try some formula in a cup and see how she gets on. Also don't forget that when you're there she knows she has the option of a bf, when you're not she'll get a chance to get a bit more thirsty so the incentive to drink from a cup will be higher.

dikkertjedap · 11/05/2011 20:59

Alternatively you can keep bf until your DS self-weans ...

girliefriend · 11/05/2011 21:06

I stopped at around 11 months but had already cut down to just a morning and evening feed by then. I think I went with drop one breastfeed a week rule, my dd was not a big milk drinker and I just made sure her general diet was healthy and included lots of yogurt, cheese etc. Offered her milk in a beaker which sometimes she wanted sometimes not, she had a bottle at bedtime until about 18mo Smile
