Asparagus wee = asparagus breastmilk

could this happen? Had asparagus for dinner, later on noticed the asparagus wee smell, but in the living room while feeding my baby.

Could it have been my breastmilk smelling? Or maybe DS2's wee? No one has weed in the living room and it's not close to the loo.

Puzzling

seems plausible!

PurveyorOfBaloney · 03/05/2011 15:23

I'd think probably the baby's wee

COCKadoodledooo · 03/05/2011 15:30

Yep, have noticed the same too.

Also you know how Berocca makes your wee luminous? Does the same to breast milk too. Really freaked me out the first time!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 03/05/2011 15:37

No way!!?? That's quite cool

What about beetroot?

Wow, that's really interesting about asparagus! But then I'm wierdly interested in these sorts of things.... did you know some people don't produce asparagus wee - something to do with having or not having a particular gene. My mum looked at me like I was mad when I mentioned asparagus wee, so she clearly has never had the 'oh, what's that funny .......ahhhh, had asparagus for tea' experience.

Tvetenia · 03/05/2011 21:45

Apparently it isn't that some people don't produce asparagus wee, rather that they can't smell it. I've never found someone who didn't smell/produce it so haven't been able to test the theory. So, narmada, in the interests of science, you must now arrange to smell your mother's post-asparagus wee and get her to smell yours. Nice. Grin

conhill · 03/05/2011 21:54

I was thinking about this the other day when I ate a load of asparagus. I was a dissapointed not to detect the asparagus wee smell from my DS. I might try again and sniff harder.... And will pay more attention when feeding him.

Further to Narmada's comment - even more interestingly some people lack the ability to smell the smell of asparagus wee rather than not produce it..

love this thread Grin

Come on, for the sake of science someone please do a taste test on the asaparagus breastmilk for us ?!

Muser · 04/05/2011 08:58

Hmm, I wonder if the asparagus I had for dinner is responsible for the immense morning poo. I love the stuff as well.

Gemjar · 04/05/2011 09:05

hmm, I have ordered some asparagus with my shopping today, I was planning to give some to DS2 as he has just started weaning, but if I eat some as well, the combination of him eating it AND getting it in milk form might unleash hell.

I'm slightly scared Grin

EauRouge · 04/05/2011 10:22

I had asparagus the other night and didn't notice any difference aroma-wise to wee or BM, perhaps I'm one of those people that can't smell it. Shall I express and put some BM in DH's coffee and see if he thinks it tastes of asparagus? Grin

It's pretty rare for the food you eat to affect your baby, it's often down to something else.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 04/05/2011 14:16

Definately does it for DD... she refused the asparagus I'd cooked but within half an hour of BF afterwards I could smell it from her nappy...

nickelbabe · 04/05/2011 14:20

EauRouge - that is true, but Asparagus is a breed apart in food.

Grin
MadreInglese · 04/05/2011 14:22
Hmm

I've never heard of, nor smelt 'asparagus wee'

You're all mad

nickelbabe · 04/05/2011 14:35

Madre - you're not one then Grin

seriously, if one can, it's a nasty smell!

Teapot13 · 04/05/2011 16:57

Yes, and it isn't that asparagus wee smells of asparagus -- it's a special, nasty smell.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 04/05/2011 17:04

It's one of those disgusting but interesting phenomenons. But asparagus breastmilk is a bit icky.

I went to a charity ball thingy once where they served asparagus as a starter. You could smell the asparagus wee as soon as you opened the door to the ladies, so I can confirm that you can certainly smell it in others.

I'm going to have to buy some now to see if DS gets it.

narmada · 04/05/2011 21:32

Oh go on, cos, you know you want to.

Cosmosis · 04/05/2011 21:47

lol ok you're on. you'll have to wait till the weekend though as I don't change nappies in the day now due to being at work.

DH doesn't get it so it will be a lesson in genetics as well Wink
