breastfeeding when pg and pain

I am currently 16 weeks pg and DD is 14 months. She feeds about twice a night.

I was just wondering is there a point when the pain plateau's or is it just completely different for everyone?

By pain do you mean nipple pain or something else?

If you mean nipple pain then mine did get amazingly better when my colostrum came in (week 24/26) but peaked in months 3-4 so I limited duration of feeds and paid a lot of attention to the latches whilst it hurt the most.

Distraction (for me) worked well so I read either childrens books aloud to DD1/DD2 or read my books or surfed the net or watched TV to take my mind off it. A bit trickier at night I grant you so maybe a book light and a gripping thriller to take you away from the discomfort until it eases off?

I guess it's nipple pain. It is in that area but feels internal. Reminding me of what the first few days with the new one will be.

It's quite intense at the start but does die down. I find I'm tensing before she feeds which probably makes it worse. At least with it being in the night it's kinda of a daze afterwards. I think if I know there is a end then mentally that will be get there or work out if I can get there IYSWIM

thanks :)

I was wondering exactly the same thing!!!! I'm 15 weeks and recently it's become soooooooo painful. Thankfully DS doesn't feed that often anymore, don't think I could cope if he did!

Truth I'm glad to hear it does get easier....

At times I even did labour breathing to cope with it so I'm a big proponent of doing what ever it takes to get through that feed, even if it's cutting it short, listening to loud music on iPod, relatching child, counting to 10 and stopping feed, what ever it takes Grin

Personally I think a few weeks or shorter/less feeds is better for a child than out right weaning though if you can't cope then that is still a valid option. The pain does go away though for the vast majority of people and becomes easier/more pleasant - I haven't heard of anyone who had pain the whole way through pg but I'm sure someone has much like a scant no. have MS through out pg.

Have you heard of the Hilary Flowers book Adventures in Tandem Nursing? It's very good as is the Kellymom.com section pg/bfing.

I have read the book but maybe I'll re-read it. tbh I didn't find it that useful in terms of information, but it did prepare me for the possibility of giving up BF DD.

I'm now at the dreading feeding stage. I think it would be better if I fed her more (but can't not work) as it's that first feed of the night that's the real killer. I would describe it as like her mouth was full of sewing needles that were being inserted in my breast in that first minute or so of latching.

Just say it gets better Grin
