using cold bottled water to mkae formula?

Hello,

I know in the uk formula is made up from boiled water and then cooled. I have been told by my paediatrician that I can make formula up using cold bottle water and have been using gerber baby water and am giving her the formula cold. Is this ok, she seems very happy? I'm worried about the whole bacteria issue....?

thanks.

what is gerber baby water?

nello · 30/04/2011 20:37

I don't actually know the specifics, think it has no sodium in it. I live in Mexico and gerber is the main baby food brand and this is water suitable for babies. Here we can't drink the tap water, not even if it has been boiled I wouldn't give it to my baby.

The World Health Organisation and the UK Department of Health advise making formula up with water over 70 degrees to kill any bacteria in it. There's a risk of salmonella and enterobacter in the powder.

Why can't you hear the water????

albusmycat · 30/04/2011 20:59

Or heat even.

I could heat the bottled water, but the peadiatrician says there is no need to...

Maybe ask the paediatrician why his opinion differs from the World Health Organisation, and decide who to go with?

vixen94 · 02/05/2011 20:42

i think if the paed has said its ok then it probably is. when my dd was young and we went out to a wedding in india it wasnt practical or safe to use tap water..even if boiled in my opinion to make bottles. i found that some bottled water had alot more chemicals and such then others so that is something to be wary of...we take for granted that in the uk our tap water is relativly safe to drink and give to our children.

The guide in Spain is to make it with cool bottled water too. If you can boil the bottled water and cool to 70 degrees then this would adhere to the who guidelines.

TheSugarPlumFairy · 02/05/2011 20:54

i suspect the tap water is potentially compromised by crypto sporidium and other algae which can be an issue for a baby.

I would probably heat the bottled water and make the formula up with hot water and then cool.

Seona1973 · 03/05/2011 12:31

it is not the bottled water that is the issue, it is the bacteria in the formula powder that is the problem - I would boil the water before making up the formula.

You need to boil the water: nursery water is not sterile and NEITHER IS THE POWDER. Hot water (70 degrees C or 158 F) needs to be in contact with the powder to make sure it is safe.

Even if the water is fine, the formula can still be contaminated and the only way to get rid of that risk is to make it up with water of 70C or over. No way round that.
