Can I get formula on the NHS?

I've got a NHS exemption card on the basis of low income, does anyone know if I could get formula free? I've heard a few people mention that you can somehow...

DD is only partially bottle feeding so it's not too much of a financial strain but every penny counts at the moment.

If it's for tax credits, you don't get it free, but you can get it at a reduced price from the clinic.

Dont know but have seen a sign for formula at clinic...looks like you have been helped here already!

my sister is on income support and got milk tokens - some of the milk tokens were for powdered formula so yes you can get it for free for the first year. I think she had to get it from the clinic though.

Thanks, everyone, what a great resource Mumsnet is! We do fit the criteria for free milk as we get child tax credit and our income is well below 13,000- I'll be phoning the tax credits phoneline tommorow. Now because I'm breastfeeding and bottle feeding do you think I'll get tokens for milk and formula? Can they do that?

You should get something if you are on Working Tax Credit, and if you are earning under £13,000 you should be getting working tax credit.

dizietsma - I think you choose either formula or milk - When i was entitled to this three years ago you could choose each time you got your benefit money from the post office. Formula is much more expensive so well worth getting the formula - even if you end up with far too much - as liquid milk is so much cheaper

Seems we can't get tokens 'cos we're getting WTC.

You might still get reduced formula normally on sale at clinics ask the receptionist.

vickiyumyum · 07/11/2005 14:12

if you get tax credits you can get it reduced at the local health clinic (you may have to ask your health visitor where it is) and it is reduced by about 1/3 so not a great saving but better than nothing, and you can get it until babies first birthday. ( i was a recpetionist in a ehalth clinic for a while at the beginning of the year)

When DS (now nearly 3) was a baby I was able to get WYSOY on prescription, as he was Lactose intollarent, I took DS to see a homeopath and they done a test, I mentioned it to my HV and she advised me that I was able to get soy milk on prescription.......

at our health clinic everyone can buy reduced formula, not just those getting benefits, lower income, etc
