In the last week i have had one blocked milk duct (or something) after another - and am currently suffering one again, woke up this morning with really sore left boob and by mid morning my right was hurting like hell too! i have checked that dd is latching on correctly - and she seems to be, i am not doing anything different as far as i can tell, i have no idea whats causing them, but its hurting like hell - my poor boob has a really hard 'lump' and i have tried massaging it when she feeds, and i have tried massaging it in the shower earlier - made no difference! anyone got any ideas PLEASE!!

Sorry to add yet another suggestion but I used to wet a tea towel and then pop it in microwave for 20 seconds. Be VERY careful it doesn't get too hot but used to feel nice on boob just before feeding. A safer option is to simply dip a tea towel in hot water and then squeeze excess. My GP suggested hot showers but that is hardly practical before every feed!

Also - I would be wary of pumping too much as this may increase your milk supply and make the problem worse!

Thanks charbell - to be honest i havent actually tried that yet - not properly anyway, tried the other day with cold and then was going to try with hot but never got chance! im going to try expressing some again so i will try that before i do - thanks i really appreciate any suggestions! xx

Also - the breastfeeding network might be right but I reckon you need to get a BFC to come out and watch you feed. I know it is your third but maybe baby number three has a slightly different way of latching on? How old is your LO?

She is 8 weeks today! i would like someone to come and tell me were im going wrong, dd IS a different feeder to my other two ds's they used to feed like they hadnt had eaten in weeks! where as dd is much calmer and slower - maybe my supply comes in quick and she is only taking slow feed and im getting backed up! - i dont know - im just guessing now!

Some babies just take their time to get the hang of it. My LO couldn't latch on properly due to flat nipples. The hospital quite happily let me go home. The first 24 hours were AWFUL. Lovely midwife came out, stayed with me for hours and tried to help and finally agreed I needed nipple shields. Baby latched on beautifully. I tried every feed to get him to do it without and then magically at 3 months, he did. It is so much better if you can either go to a BFC's house or get one to come to you. (LO is 4 months now and still happily sucking without shield.)

Oh well done charbell! it is great when it works out! dd so far has been the easiest to feed until now - i have actually ENJOYED feeding her as opposed to just trying to fill em' i am going to try and get a BFC round ASAP!

Happy the prob has gone - hope it doesn't come back. Poor little one with the jabs - my ds has his soon - not looking forward to this. Hope you got some answers to the bf issue at your appointment.

KiwiKate · 09/11/2005 05:09

HE - hope the problem is gone for good. How did the jabs go?

Helenemjay · 09/11/2005 12:47

Hiya girls - so far so good! im keeping my fingers crossed! dd did really really well with her jabs Dr said she was perfect - of course! she was whinging a bit when they did the first needle and she really squealed and then i had to turn her around so they could stab her other leg and she let out a really long cry i felt so awful as i had to then pass her to my mum and dash out and pick ds1 up as it was 3.05! and they let them out of school at 3.10! so i couldnt even stay and console dd! but she was fast asleep when i got back 15 mins later! mum said she only cried for about 30 seconds! bless her - she's been fine since! Never got chance to ask HV or anyone about blocked ducts - i tried like hell but our HV is CRAP and i couldnt even pin her down for a 5 minute chat as she was busy and running around! - hopefully i wont need her anyway!
