mastitis- how long for ab's to kick in?

I've been taking antibiotics for 48 hours now, and still have a hard, red, tender lump on one breast. I feel alright though, not flu-ey at all. I was just wondering if this is normal, or a sign that the antibiotics aren't working? How long will it take for the lump to go? I'm massaging before/during feeding, putting on hot compresses etc, but nothing seems to help. I'm not in great discomfort, except when I touch the area. I think I am just a bit paranoid about it getting worse, especially with the long weekend and we are going away for a week too.

I felt much better within 24 hours of the ABs but the lump took about 3 days to go and the area was tender for about 4 or 5 days - I fed DD, massages and expressed in the bath.

You should feel better within 48 hours but for me the lump and tenderness can take a while to go. Have you got a 10 to 14 day course of ABs? They often just give you 7days but you need a longer course than that.

are you taking painkillers? Ibuprofen helps with swelling too.

Sorry it's taken ages to reply, I've been away and mobile coverage was patchy. The redness and soreness did go in a few days although the lump took longer to go down and I can still feel it a bit. I think I nipped it in the bud early enough with the abs thankfully, although stupid GP only gave me 7 day course and as I was away I couldn't go back for more Angry Fx I'll be ok. Why arent GPs more aware of treatment of breastfeeding issues. She was useless regarding nipple thrush as well...

I've had mastitis while away and the nearest dr was great about prescribing abs. So if it happens again don't worry too much if you're away.

That's good to know, thanks!
