Out of date Lansinoh - would you?

Baby is not even here yet (am 34 weeks), and I already have painfully sore nipples :(

I did manage to breastfeed my first DD, but the first 4 months were horrendous with cracked, sore, bleeding nipples. Now I am worried it will be the same story this time.

Is there anything I can do? I have expressed off a bit of colostrum and rubbed it into the nipple, still sore. I still have half a tube of Lansinoh left from when DD was a baby, but it expired in Dec 2010 - can I use it, or should I throw it out?

i hope it's o.k cause i've been using my out of date tube for the past 3months!

Odille · 29/04/2011 19:51

If you've stored it well (i.e. not on top of a radiator etc) and the consistency looks ok I'd use it.

SybilBeddows · 29/04/2011 19:53

mine was a year out of date when I had dc3 and he's still ok Grin

And I still have the rest of the tube, which I am using as lip balm.

Well I smothered it on last night (and it went all over the duvet cover in the night). It looked normal, not sure it helped that much though, still in pain :(

Using mine which expired 2010 too! I had a terrible time bf my dd - 6 weeks of agony, mastitis, thrush, bleeding nipples before it started to settle BUT this time is so much better. DD is now 3 weeks old and wasn't able to feed her for a week due to her being on SCBU - had to express - which i thought would make things even more difficult but she latched on beautifully from start and its a pleasure to feed this time. Think it helps having bit of previous experience. Be positive hopefully be the same for you x

a) i'd use it
b) i think your colostrum is probably a better ointment for it than lansinoh anyway.....
c) do you think you could speak to your doctor? not sure this sounds right... your nipples shouldn't be sore so early???! i don't know enough (and i'll go away and find out) but do you reckon it could be thrush? might explain why it was so painful last time??

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 01/05/2011 22:22

lanisoh has a best before date???

coldcomfortHeart · 02/05/2011 16:28

Are they just really sensitive or are they painful? Because like MummyElk the first thing I thought was thrush perhaps...?

TabithaTwitchet · 02/05/2011 20:14

I am seeing doctor tomorrow for routine antenatal, so will ask about thrush, didn't think about anything like that. It is just one that hurts (though actually slightly better today)- skin round it was also very dry, and nipple was sticking out as though I was really cold, but the other is totally normal.

How would I know if it was thrush?

copy and pasting from a random website. will do some more research.....Blush
but
"In mother:
intense nipple or breast pain that occurs from birth, lasts throughout the feeding, or is not improved with better latch-on and positioning
sudden onset of nipple pain after a period of pain-free nursing
cracked nipples
nipples that are itchy and/or burning and that may appear pink or red, shiny, or flaky and/or have a rash and tiny blisters; nipples may also appear normal
shooting pains in the breast during or after a feeding if the yeast has invaded the milk ducts
nipple or breast pain with correct use of an automatic electric breastpump
a vaginal yeast infection"

When i've had it my nipples have started to flake, sometimes a bit itchy etc. Also sort of shooting pains through my boobs to my nipples..
There's a great deal of debate about, um, fluconazole which you can take to shift thrush in boobs but which GPs say isn't licensed for bfing mums. But it might be worth talking to your GP and seeing if it's possible to take that whilst pg...... If it is thrush I think it's worth trying to shift it before you have your baby...
(saying all that it's also possible that baby then catches it again during birth....oh, i don't know!! these things are sent to try us Smile)
interested to see what your doc says tomorrow

Thanks MummyElk :)

Dr had a (brief) look, said it didn't look like a problem (was much better yesterday anyway), but to go back if it flares up again and that I can put cream on if it gets dry.

Does sound from your description like it could have been thrush, but seems better now in any case. Also sounds like I could definitely have had it when DD was little too, so will be more vigilent this time round.

at least you've raised it with him and as you say, vigilance and knowledge of it is all you need really.
well done!
now go and put your feet up, (as far as is possible with DD around)...that baby will be here before you know it Grin
