I spoke to the manager who was horrified that this had happened, but no matter how sorry she is, the fact is that it has happened.

She assured me she'd do her best to ensure this doesnt happen again but honestly, I trust the woman (as she looked so embarrassed) but I dont trust Tescos or their employees after this. I think its should be looked into independently to make sure they are dealing with baby milk safely on the whole.

I mean how many of them have walked past this aisle, seen it and not given it a second thought!

Who is the best governing body to talk to? I felt like crying imagining some poor baby drinking this. It had been ripped open, sealed shut again with packing tape and had obviously been there for ages. [csad]

I dont think anyone would have actually given it to their baby though? Most people wouldn't buy half opened food to consume so theres not much chance of anyone giving their baby opened milk.

oh my god!!! that's really really bad!! I agree about it being looked into independently...trading standards perhaps?? Makes you wonder what else goes on behind the scenes [chmm]

JarethTheGoblinKing · 27/04/2011 21:00

Somebody in the store made an error in judgement, nobody would actually buy open milk, let alone for a baby.

You don't need to speak to a government body about it..

thefruitwhisperer · 27/04/2011 21:02

I agree Marne, but thats not the point. How was it allowed to even get on the clearance shelf. And it had been deliberatly 'mended' as if to make it ok that it was ripped open.

This makes me wonder whether they even bother to look at sell by dates and the like. Its very lax. I do also think a proper reprimand is necessary, who knows what else they get up to, someone there obviously thinks it was ok to sell or how else did it get onto the shelf.

JennyPiccolo · 27/04/2011 21:08

i bought cartons of formula from asda that were out of date, displayed on the shelf as normal. Always check!

PorcelinaOfTheVastOceans · 27/04/2011 21:17

that's terrible! not surprised she was embarrassed, hope someone got a disciplinary! not much advice, but a couple of months ago i bought baby milk that was eight months past it's use by date! i reported the store to the council. they emailed to say they would get back to me asap, been two months now and not heard a jot from them.

thefruitwhisperer · 27/04/2011 21:22

Exactly. Its the mechanism/system that allowed this to happen that worries me and needs to be investigated.

Someone made a mistake, yes, but how were they allowed to make a mistake without someone in a huge supermarket thinking, hang on that doesnt seem right. For them to go to the extent of packaging the thing up too, its like they thought it was the right thing to do! You wouldnt even do that with cows milk?! This is a giant Tesco Extra and the one that supplies all the central London stores...

That is appalling! Who would think it is ok to sell opened baby milk?! They are also breaking the law by selling baby milk at a reduced price, so if you want to report them you have strong grounds.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 27/04/2011 21:46

I know it looks appalling on the shelf. It's actually NOT a big thing. Nobody would have bought an open bottle of milk.

Some bright spark probably thought they'd show initiative and put an open packet on the saver shelf (wouldn't really be an issue with a packet of pastries) and had a big FAIL wrt baby milk.

Seriously, I wouldn't read any more into it.

Mammie81 · 27/04/2011 21:56

Id still complain to someone other than Tesco. Just because we wouldnt buy it, doesnt mean someone out there might not. My friends husband will buy anything thats going cheap.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 27/04/2011 22:31

Well yeah, inform trading standards
