How long to feed 3mo baby?

We formula feed and I was wondering how long it should take to feed my DD.

We've had some issues with reflux - well I'm guessing it's reflux as she kept throwing up her milk. Doctor wasn't too bothered about giving a diagnosis.

We changed to SMA stay down milk and have seen an improvement. She still throws up sometimes but it's not as much or as frequently.

We initially used 3month+ teats for a couple of days but DD really struggled to feed so we swapped to variflow teats and she immediately improved and took the bottle within 5-10 minutes. However, after the first week, she started throwing up a lot again and having bad wind. MIL who is trained nursery nurse suggested this might be because she was gulping to keep up with flow of milk and therefore taking in lots of air. So we changed back to the 3month teat. After a day or two, she seemed to get the hang of it and fed quite happily and had a lot less wind. Indeed, some days we don't use gripe water!

However, it does take about 30 minutes to drink the milk and another 30 minutes to wind her properly. If we take less time to wind, she invariably vomits when we lay her down on play mat or change mat.

I was wondering if this is typical length of time and if DD will start to take bottles faster as she gets older.

I don't know if the reflux is severe enough to go back to the doctor. He basically saw it as a nuisance rather than a problem because her weight gain is ok on 50th percentile. He did prescribe infant gaviscon but didn't warn us that it makes the milk thicker so after a couple of days of baby drinking only half her bottle and having chronic wind, we gave it up and changed to the staydown milk instead.

I bet the doctor wouldn't take nothing if he had reflux and was otherwise OK.

Sorry OP I don't know the answer to your question.

haha Grin that's pretty much what I thought too.

I know it could be a lot worse and I could go back and push the situation BUT at the moment we are sort of coping and DD isn't being medicated so I'm a bit reluctant. I guess I just need to know this will get better.

Of course it will get better.

DD was BF but 3 months was her most fussiest and it felt like hell at the time. I was about to switch to exclusively expressing as this was the easier option at the time. Then things started to fall into place little bit by little bit. Me returing to work actually seemed to help Hmm but think it was the combination of breast and bottle. By 6/7 months, that time seemed like an age ago.

When you're going through it, every day seems forever, but if you can stand back and see how short a few months is that might help.

Hopefully other people who have experienced long bottle feeds can come along.
