Independent report on the composition of infant formulas in the UK

Am having DH print it for my weekend reading. Would love to hear other opinions.

quote....

It can be argued that there is little need for some products
? for example, follow-on formula, hungry baby milks, partially hydrolysed milks, milks
to help with digestion, and goodnight milks ? as there is little evidence to support their
usefulness. They appear to fulfil a perceived need, rather than an actual need.

while I can see the justification for follow on milks, but without Nutramigen my baby's life would be very difficult!

You'll have to wait a little while as it is a 100 page document. I'm on page 19. And am probably going to fall asleep soon! [bublush]

It is a weighty article, very interesting but also likely to upset people too. Hopefully this will not go into a horrid BF/FF debate!

For my part my DD has a confirmed Cows Milk Protein Allergy and this was confirmed after 7 weeks of BF and an eventual BF refusal and other issues which I have now made my peace with.

Next time (if I am so lucky!) I will know to avoid dairy and hopefully will have a more positive BF experience.

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 21/04/2011 22:10

ah munki tis shame but not untypical ime that no one was able to better advise you re avoiding dairy.

Hope you get that better second experience. Smile

We're away at the moment but will make mental note to check out the report when i'm back at the computer.

munkii Sad. That is exactly what this document is trying to prevent. It is written predominantly for hcp (although, of course, anyone can read it) to provide objective, clear, scientific information about infant milks that is not provided by the industry. Currently the only education and information that hcp receive regarding formula is (essentially) advertising from the industry, which is in violation of the WHO Code, and this document seeks to redress that.

Although the CWI supports exclusive bf for six months and then continued bf along with complimentary foods for a year and beyond, this document s not about bf vs ff. It is about objective education.

Your quoted excerpt above does not apply to specialist formulas available on prescription for specific conditions such as your DC's but rather to some of the products available on the open market for which there is no evidence of further benefit.

So far it has a good summary of the history of infant milks and the infant milk market and an introduction into the main different types of formula (viz modified cow's milk, soya and elemental.

But since we are also trying to decorate our sitting room and entertain DS, as well as spend time with the in-laws, I've not gotten any further than that.

Sorry.

Promise to be back with more info though n

No one else?

I will have a look, but not got time at the moment. Thanks for posting the link.

Glad someone has had a look at all this, about time.

When I chose formula for DS I had no information to go on at all, except anecdote and advertising, a truly shocking state of affairs.

MummyBerryJuice · 26/04/2011 16:01

I think it is brilliant that there is proper, objective information at last. Even if it is just a start and an attempt to prompt the responsible parties to follow-up.

Excellent that medical professionals now have the information they need to make a proper recommendation.

(I'm still woefully early on in the reading though Blush)
