Keeping milk cool on plane

I'm exclusively pumping at the mo and travelling to Italy in a couple of weeks. I need to be able to transport about 400ml of breast milk with me as hand luggage as I'm not planning on expressing at the airport.

I have the medela cool bag that holds the bottles and has a frozen ice pack thing in the middle to keep the bottles nice and cold. My question is, am I going to be able to take this as hand luggage? I know that the breastmilk will be fine, but what about the ice pack? My DH thinks it's effectively a liquid so won't be allowed. I think it's essential for feeding my baby.

Can anyone settle this dispute?! Does anyone by any chance have any experience of this?

Thanks

I really don't know what is the situation wrt to baby food at the moment, but if they were in 100 ml (or less) containers it shouldn't be a problem as long as it is in a plastic zip lock bag when you go through security

It is a liquid, and you might be asked to taste it> I would definately speak to airport security about this,as depending on what is happening in the world, i have gone through not being able to take anything over the required ml's allowed of liquid, to being allowed DD's juice etc. But they have always made me open her juice/water and have a gulp!

I travelled recently from Heathrow with ice packs to keep the milk cold and it was fine. I just let the guy handing out the small plastic bags know and he notified the person on the X-ray.

...and they weren't bothered about the quantity of milk...

When I say "recently" it was in March this year.

That is JUST the information I needed Pink thanks for being the guinea pig! We're flying from Heathrow too. I will just go ahead as if it's all fine and make sure that I flag it up before I get to the security guy.

Will also take cartons of formula with me as emergency back up just in case I come a cropper!

I hope you don't have any problems.

Enjoy you trip.

Hi Cordiality
I would take your pump with you as the formula cartons may cause a problem going through security. Try taking powder and water. They may want you to open these too to taste them. I was forced throw away my son's drink (only juice) they wouldn't let me take anything through with liquid in.
I also got the spanish inquisition about where my milk was for my DD who at the time was 4 months old. I was BF at the time and had to explain that I wasn't carrying any milk, but they didn't understand they kept asking where the milk was and how was I going to feed the baby. By this time they'd xrayed all my bags and were now attracting a croud. I put it in simple terms, that I was breast feeding my daughter and I made the milk, did they want to inspect that! Needless to say several red faced men, hurried me on through the rest of the checks!

We were flying from Bournemouth so not Heathrow. Try rining them to check their policy.

Best of luck.

I ff and have been to airport lots. Ice packs are fine, as are as many bottles as you need, as lobg as u are happy to taste them. Cartons of formula are not permitted in hand luggage because you can't taste them.

I've just come back from holiday flying through Gatwick with 6 month old DD. We took Ella's kitchen pouches and her sippy cup of water without any problems . I was asked (twice) if I had any milk for her (she's BF).

If you want cartons of formula you can buy these in Boots in the departure lounge.
