If I had one reflux baby, am I more likely to have another?

DD1 had silent reflux - it was hell. Thankfully, it was diagnosed at 5 wks and after that poiont we managed it reasonably well with Gaviscon.

DD2 is 12 days old. She is sick after virtually every feed, sometimes just posseting but 3/4 times a day she throws up a large amount of curdled milk. For the last few nights she has become unsettled in the evening after feeding - arching her back and crying as if in pain/rage. She fusses on and off the breast. A dummy helps, if I can get her to take it.

DH is convinced we have another reflux sufferer Sad

DD1 was a refluxer but whilst DD2 & DD3 were a bit pukey-ier than normal in the early weeks they soon settled down and were fine (both DD2 & DD3 has 'mother suspects reflux' in their red books at around 2 weeks old).

I suspect DD1's was brought on/exacerbated by the old school treatment for her jaundice (2oz 2 hourly from day 3), her being induced early and subsequent ventouse delivery which I have read can be linked to reflux due to twisting/pulling on the neck leading to problems with diaphragm (I can't find where I read it and I am very vague on the details so please don't take it as gospel). As DD2 & DD3's births were very different perhaps a tendency to be sicky where never given the circumstances to develop that DD1's did.

Or it may be that the dice landed where they did and DD1 got reflux but DD2/3 were lucky enough to avoid it.

Hopefully this is just a 'phase' for your DD2 but if she doesn't settle down then I'd be first to agree that she needs to be checked out. At least you know the drill now (upright after feeds, little and often, etc, etc, etc).

Oh, random tip for getting a baby to take a dummy is tilt it upwards and gently brush the roof of their mouth with the teat, then slowly withdraw it, repeat a few times. It has worked for me before with a few babies but obviously not all! I'm not usually 'for' dummies (or against them for that matter) but they can be a life saver for reflux babies (and their parents).

Sad I feel for you.
D1 had reflux of the puking kind, was awful. Ds2 didn't have it, thankfully.

I did find with ds1 a dummy really helped him.
As did patting and rocking him for winding instead of rubbing, keeping him upright for at least half an hour after each feed, I propped up his cot mattress etc etc.
He was also put on Enfamil AR formula and that's when he really calmed down.

I have had two refluxers sorry to report. DD1 was moderate, DS2 severe. On Lansoprazole and boy am I glad we got him medicated sooner rather than later!Hope your new LO is just a happy spitter. Reflux is hereditary, sorry to say.
