8-9 week big slowdown in weight gain

DD3 10 weeks now. For the last 10 days she's been putting on weight really slowly compared to 150 g weekly increases previously. Ony 50 g over the last 10 days. She only feeds 5-10 mins at a time then just refuses to take any more but this has been since birth so am not worried about that. Have tried weighing before and after feeding and she is taking in milk at each feed, but perhaps not as much as I'd like (70 g approx).

Anyone else had similar experience ?

I think you're worrying about this far too much.

Does she seem fine otherwise? The advice is after they've regained their birth weight to only weigh them once a month, otherwise normal slow-downs and catch-ups get over analysed.

The weighing before and after meals seems excessive and like you are over worrying. Would it be worth while ringing one of the helplines to help ease your mind or maybe assess why you worrying about this so much?

FWIW yes DD's weight gain did slow after 6 weeks, putting on between 1-3oz as average (but more normal amounts before). She slipped centiles but had consistent gain and was a happy alert baby with plenty of output. We did switch feeding to try and lengthen her meals a bit as like yours, she was a quick feeder.

Yes you're right I am worrying far too much: reason being that with DD1 the same thing happened except it got to a stage where she was having more dry nappies than wet ones and she stopped putting on any weight at all, I had to express milk with her because of going back to work and it all basically went pear shaped from then on, I had less and less milk and eventually had to switch to FF which she hated... total nightmare. I don't want to go there again so am trying hard to preserve milk supply!!

Anyway she's just had another (v short) feed followed by lots of smiles and cute gurgly noises so she can't be doing too badly!

It does make you paranoid even if you are mostly rational about it, and with your history it's understandable that it's going to be hard to separate the two issues.

Is there a local BF cafe, sounds like you do with ongoing support to help you have the right perspective. Just a touch base once a week type thing.

I think people thought I was being a bit funny when I commented about how proud they must be of their little one's chubbiness (probably never came out the right way) Blush

How many feeds a day is she having? The switch feeding did help to lengthen her feeds as well.

She's having about 6-7 feeds a day. What is switch feeding?!

No such thing as BF café where I am. Only source of support is the paediatrician who is v good but today suggested a urine test to rule out urine infection Hmm which means getting up at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning and holding 10wk old baby over a plastic pot till she decides to wee in it. That'll do wonders for my anxiety levels Wink

Sorry switch feeding is when you keep changing sides. So after they're done with the second side, you go back to the first.

6-7 sounds a little on the low side, any chance of squeezing a few extra in.

Again RL support will be more effective and knowledgeable.

Urine test sounds like fun Grin
