Breastfeeding / nursing chair

Hi there,

I'm 34 weeks pregnant (with my first baby) and trying to get the final nesting bits done. I really hope to be able to breastfeed but after reading and watching a lot on the subject, I am preparing myself for it to potentially be a challenge, and so I want to set myself up as well as possible to try! Would any of you recommend a specific nursing chair or are there better, more comfortable options? All advice very gratefully received!

Thanks

I fyou find a chair you love buy it, but most specific nursing chairs are fugly imho Smile

If you go to ebay and put glider chair or nursing chair in and see what comes up. With baby one I had a wooden hauck one with a stool and for baby two it was a hauck metal one with stool. I bought them online and they were about half the price they were in mothercare.

I would sit in them in mothercare or babiesrus to see which one you like then buy them online. Ebay has shops with 100% customer satisfaction as well as second hand ones you could buy. DEFINITELY GET THE STOOL AS WELL - I still use the stools now (admittedly the chairs broke as the kids got older they spun each other etc...). The metal one was mega comfy.

The curvy breast feeding pillow I think I got cheeper from argos was well worth it - my son loves to fall asleep on it still. Breastfeeding is a trauma - with baby one it took at least a month before it clicked - for both my kids their mouths needed to just grow a bit for it to work - use the breastfeeding support in your area - mine was gr8 and very supportive.

I had a caesarian both times and I used a chair and lying down in bed - positions which worked for me .

Hope that was useful

tbh I just got a good curvy breastfeeding cushion as DD was on the boob so often as a newborn that I'd have been living in a nursing chair otherwise. I could then just flob out on the sofa and feed away. I miss those times. If I could back, I'd spend more time enjoying being sat down. :)

Don't be too quick to get a chair with arms - ok for the first couple of months, but soon you'll find that the arms get in the way of holding the baby the way you feel most comfortable with, and eventually, of course, the baby simply gets too long to fit between the arms! Grin

I have an old Lloyd Loom-type chair like this - search on ebay for 'Lloyd loom nursing chair' (or just for nursing chair and see what comes up). That one's going for £6, assuming you can collect! Smile What you will really want, rather than a chair that rocks/glides, or has arms, is a nice low seat and supportive back. You might use a bf pillow to help support the baby or prop a cushion under your arm, but honestly, what you really want is low seat so your feet sit squarely on the floor, good back and NO ARMS. i got this www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S59875773 in navy for DS1 with matching footstool (which has added bonus of extra storage). was BRILLIANT. he is now 2.6 and we still use it every night for reading stories before bedtime. proved to be such a good purchase, bought another one in brown for DS2 when he came along. arms were not a problem for me - maybe because the seat is quite wide? does take up a bit of space, but footstool also doubles as extra space for changing etc. highly recommended.

I love love love my glider chair and stool. I initially used to feed in bed but when DS moved into his own room got the chair really cheap from ebay. It is soooo comfy and supports my back.

The arms don't get in the way I find because they are quite short and as they are padded they don't bump baby.

I love my Dutalier chair & stool and still feed a lot in it now DD is 4 months. It's also good for settling her for bed and wonderfully comfy for story-time!

Definitely try before you buy. With glider chairs, you get what you pay for IMO. I got a Tutti Bambini chair first and it was awful - badly made, creaked and knocked when gliding and so stiff I couldn't recline. We took it back to Mothercare and upgraded to the Dutalier.
